August: The Immaculate Heart of Mary
The month of August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The Immaculate Heart is often worshiped together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the devotion we celebrate in June. Just as the Sacred Heart represents Christ's love for mankind, the Immaculate Heart represents the desire of the Blessed Virgin to bring all people to her Son. We come to Christ through Mary, as Christ came to us through her.
On August 15, we remember Mary as we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. This Holy Day marks the occasion of the Virgin Mary's bodily ascent to Heaven at the end of her life. A variety of family activities related to the Feast of the Assumption will be included in upcoming Family Faith Newsletters.
During this month of August, take time to share and explain to your children these Catholic traditions and devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary.
Mass Readings for Sunday, August 1: Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the Gospel this weekend, John continues the story of when Jesus miraculously fed the crowd of 5000 from only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes. Jesus' message is clear: He is the Living Bread.
During Jesus' time, bread was very important. They had other foods, like figs, melons, cheese, vegetables, meat, but they ate bread with every meal. It was their most important food. Without bread, the people would have starved. In understanding the significance of this food, Jesus explains the parallel of physical bread to eat relating to the "true bread" from God: “…it wasn’t Moses who gave you bread out of heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.”
Jesus wanted the people to know that he was talking about the importance of taking in good food for our soul as well as our body. We need the nourishment that we receive from reading and learning the important things from the Holy Bible. Jesus wanted the people to know that He was the bread of heaven.

Bread of Life Recipe Card
This weekend, we are reminded how Jesus is the Bread of Life. Just as bread and food are essential for living, Jesus is essential for our soul. In this craft, children create a Bread of Life Recipe Card Holder to display a recipe for bread or another family favorite meal!
Materials
- Paper Plate
- Markers
- Glue
- Scissors
- Paper and Decorating Supplies
Procedure
- On a separate sheet of paper or with markers/decorative supplies, write the Bible verse: "I Am the Bread of Life" John 6:35 If written on a separate sheet of paper, glue this to the top of the plate.
- On a recipe card or colorful sheet of paper, use markers/decorative supplies to write the recipe for making bread, or another family favorite meal.
- Using the scissors, make an upside down u-shaped slit in the lower part of the plate. Attach the recipe card in the slit, using glue to secure the recipe card.
- Decorate the plate with markers and decorating supplies.
- Display the plate in a holder, or use a second plate as a backing, for all to see!
