Finally, in October, our biggest fundraiser of the year kicks off. We’re pleased to partner again with APEX for our annual Fun Run! Apex is a leadership program that focuses on developing student self-control, decision making and interpersonal skills vital for both school and life success. Students will learn more about this year’s leadership theme “AS ONE” beginning on 25 Oct. More information about our APEX event will be coming home in Thursday folders in the coming weeks.
Thank you for your support of the CFES PTO! Without you, we couldn’t help our school!
Social Emotional Learning
Did you know October is Emotional Intelligence Awareness Month? Emotional Intelligence (or EQ) is a person’s ability to recognize emotions in themselves and others and respond in a socially appropriate way. Before a child can learn to manage and regulate emotions, they need to have an understanding of emotions and be able to recognize those emotions in themselves and others.
Here are some tips to build your child’s Emotional Intelligence:
Use books- Ask questions about a character's emotions when reading a story. “How do you think they are feeling?” Point out their facial expressions as clues to understanding what they might feel. You can also read books about specific emotions and discuss what makes them feel that way.
Label your child’s emotions- “It looks like you feel angry/disappointed/excited right now. Is that right?”
Show empathy- Listen and validate their feelings.“I get upset when I don’t get what I want too.”
Model appropriate ways to express emotions- All emotions are okay, but all behaviors are not. “I feel annoyed that we are stuck in traffic. Let’s turn on the radio and listen to some music!”
Teach healthy coping skills- Deep breaths, coloring, squishing play-doh, getting some exercise, etc.
Develop problem solving skills- Don’t solve their problems; act as a coach. Ask questions like “What do you think you could do to solve this problem?”
Emotional intelligence is linked to better relationships, improved mental health, and success in adulthood! Check out this article for more info: https://www.verywellfamily.com/tips-for-raising-an-emotionally-intelligent-child-4157946

· The teacher’s college major, whether the teacher has any advanced degrees, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree.

House Program
Throughout the month of October students will participate in house meetings. We will be focusing on each house trait with a book and activity. Ask your students about the house activity for the week!
This week, the Red House is in the lead! Take a moment to ask your student what house they are in, and how they show wolf pride at school!
