To inspire students to live faith filled lives
and to be, like St. John the Baptist,
heralds of God's love in the world
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK...
And they shall name him Emmanuel
Dear Parents,
It is very clear from both the weather and the excitement of our students that the time has come for Christmas Break. Yesterday we had our grades 1-3 Christmas Concert. Tomorrow we will have the kindergarten Christmas Pageant, and there have been Christmas parties galore. It is an exciting and exhausting week.
On behalf of the entire faculty and staff of St. John the Baptist School, I want to wish all of you a most holy and blessed Christmas. May you and your families experience the deep and lasting Grace of the Incarnation of our Lord, Jesus Christ. May the Mercy and Love of God be the gifts you receive and give this year.
Today’s Gospel reminds us of the angel’s announcement to Joseph of the coming of God’s Son. Matthew writes, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means God is with us.” (MT 1: 23)
Matthew recounts Joseph’s experience of the encounter with God’s angel in a dream. The angel delivers the same message to Joseph as he does to Mary in Luke’s Gospel, “Do not be afraid.” When God sends amazingly good news to us, it seems that we can be taken by surprise. We, like Joseph and Mary, may ask if we are ready, worthy and prepared for what God has in store for us.
May this Christmas be filled with the amazing things God has in store for you and your family. May your time together be filled with joy and peace. As you gather and celebrate Christmas and as you hear the words of Matthew’s Gospel; “and they shall name him Emmanuel”, may you be filled with confidence that this means God is with us.
Peace and Merry Christmas,
Daniel A. Minelli
