The Cocoon
Did you know that most survivors we work with at The Cocoon suffer from PTSD? Sexual assault and intimate partner violence can cause a lot of trauma. Along with struggling with PTSD, a lot of survivors often struggle with anxiety, depression, flashbacks, and triggers. Victimization is more than just a “one-time event”. It causes a lot of continuous trauma, fear, and struggles for survivors.
PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. You can develop PTSD at any age, and it’s more common than you might think. According to the National Center for PTSD, about seven or eight out of every 100 people will have PTSD at some point during their lives. Additionally, around eight million adults have PTSD in a given
year.
With the support of the Wood County ADAMHS Board and partnerships with local agencies like NAMI of Wood County, A Renewed Mind, and Children’s Resource Center, The Cocoon is able to provide 24/7 support and linkages to professional services for those suffering the effects of abuse.
If you or someone you know is currently or has experienced abuse, help is available 24/7, 365 days a year. Call 419-373-1730 and select option #2 to reach a trained Cocoon advocate. They can offer immediate supports, assist with safety planning, and help connect survivors with services for themselves and their children.

Introducing: Provider Staff Spotlight!
March is Women's History Month
Mental Health in Women - A Quick Overview:
Recent research has identified disparities between women and men in regard to risk, prevalence, presentation, course, and treatment of mental disorders.
Rates of Mental Health Conditions – Each year, 1 in 5 women in the United States has a mental health problem such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or an eating disorder.
Research – Although research shows that women and men have similar rates of mental health problems, the types of mental conditions may differ.
Depression – The most common mental health problem in women is depression. Twice as many women experience depression in their lifetime than men. Approximately 1 in 9 women 18 and older have had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.
PTSD – Compared with men, women are twice as likely to experience PTSD. Women are more likely to have hypervigilance, feel depressed, and have trouble feeling emotions; men are more likely to feel angry and have problems with alcohol or drugs.
Anxiety – Women are twice as likely as men to experience generalized anxiety disorder or panic disorder.
Suicide – Women attempt suicide more often than men; however, men are four times more likely to die by suicide.
Alcohol use – Women are less likely to experience alcohol use disorder than men.
Barriers to Accessing Mental Health Care Services Among Women
- Economic barriers – lack of insurance/cost (including premiums and copays)
- Lack of awareness about mental health issues, treatment options, and available services
- Stigma associated with mental illness
- Lack of time/related support (time off work, child care, transportation)
- Lack of appropriate intervention strategies including integration of mental health and primary health care services
