Arts in Education Week Promoted at Sharyland High School

SHS Librarian Nicole Cruz promoted Arts in Education Week. She added messages to the daily announcements, sent thank you treats to all the Fine Arts teachers, photographed performing and visual artists and added them to the SHS website banner, supported performing artists at the local Bands of America Competition, had library office aides create positive spirit banners, and partnered with one Fine Arts teacher on a SISD Education Foundation Grant application.JHS 1st Platinum Reader

Camilo Del Angel is a 5th Grader at JHS. He spent this summer doing something he loves, reading. His favorite book series is Tapestry by Henry H. Neff. He became our first Platinum Reader at JHS on the second day of eligibility for AR testing. He has read over 2,000,000 words this school year. We are so proud of him. Camilo states, "Reading is fun because I like to imagine stuff in my head while I read . I also like to guess what will happen next when I stop reading."
Catching Dewey

North Student’s Poetry Published Locally and Nationally.

Jada Cantu-Cabrera (8th grader during the 2017-2018 school year) submitted two original poems to two different competitions this past school year and received a letter and an e-mail this summer informing her that her poems were chosen for publication. Her poem “Symphony” will be published by the America Library of Poetry in the anthology Futures, which is scheduled for release in the Fall of this year. Her poem “Texas Moonlight” will be published in CALLED TO RISE: Youth Anthology, the first annual edition of the youth anthology, a City of McAllen Poet Laureate Program. She submitted these poems as a result of her librarian, Mr. Koenig, making these opportunities available and encouraging students to enter.
B. L. Gray Junior High supports HEB's Book Drive & Read In
B L. Great Junior High scholars participated in this year's HEB book drive. Over 640 books were donated by the community and the library. Scholars also took part in the HEB Read In. The Rattlers dropped everything and read on Friday, September 14, from 9:30-10:00.
Public Library Sign Up Month in Action at Lloyd & Dolly Bentsen Elementary

McAllen Public Library visited Bentsen Elementary Library and provided free library cards to students. Parents were very impressed with all the services offered by the McAllen Public Library. Parents were made aware of the variety media they are able to check out in the library. The event was made more memorable by students taking their library cards home. Students left eager to visit the McAllen Public library and start using their library card.
Shimotsu Read Blue Club

Shimotsu 5th and 6th grade students are excited about another year of thought-provoking books. Students in the Shimotsu Read Blue Club will be reading books from the 2018-2019 Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List.

Grandparents are Celebrated at RD Martinez Elementary

Students at Martinez Elementary celebrated Grandparent's Day in the library. Grandparents enjoyed their muffin and coffee while students complete activities and read with their grandparents. It was great to see how the students used their communication skills when conducting an interview with their grandparents. Students were able to learn about their grandparents educational background.

Paola Velazquez is a sophomore at Sharyland Advanced Academic Academy. She enjoys reading non-fiction. She is a fan of any World War II books. Paola is a member of the Mighty Rattler Marching Band. The Epic Fail of arturo zamora by Pablo Cartaya
It’s summertime in Miami and Arturo is up to his usual routine: basketball, mango smoothies, and working at his family’s restaurant. His routine is soon interrupted by two things. First, a new girl moves into his apartment complex. Second, a land developer opens up a new business. Arturo soon finds himself struggling with his feelings for the new girl and helping his family fight against the land developer’s plans to make big changes to the community. This is a beautiful story of the importance and power of family.
Sharyland High School Published Poets

Seniors Vanessa Vargas Cruz and Vanessa Vega are published poets. Both students entered the Called to Rise Youth Poetry Anthology competition last spring. They were notified in September that their entries were selected for publication. Both love to read and write and are frequent library visitors.Reading Builds Empathy

H-E-B Book Drive @ Shimotsu

Shimotsu Elementary participated in the H-E-B Book Drive Challenge. Students and staff members donated over 1,200 new or gently used books to the H-E-B campaign. Students helped to count and box up the books for delivery to our local store.
Interactive Classification

Students participated in an interactive activity that helped them understand how books are organized in the library. Mrs. S. Silva guided students throughout the activity. It was a very fun and silly lesson for all!

Kinder and 1st Grade Love Mo Willems at JHS

Kinder and 1st Grade students have been enjoying Mo Willems' books this month in the library. They loved listening to his hilarious books about Pigeon, Gerald, and Piggie. We have had many laughs and enjoyed making some activities together.

RHE Learning Lunches

The first RHE Library Learning Lunch was held on Friday, September 7th. Teachers and staff enjoyed learning about the box tops program and were treated to sandwiches, Reserva coffee, and Smallcakes cupcakes. Teachers had a great time and are anxiously awaiting the next Learning Lunch.
Wernecke Wins prize for HEB Read 3 Read-In

Mrs. Ramos and her campus (Wernecke Elementary) participated in the HEB Read 3 Read-In on September 14th. She is very excited that she was one of the drawing winners! Her campus will be receiving a $100 H-E-B gift-card!
Mrs. Quinlan's Pre-K Class Earns 1st for RD Martinez HEB Book Drive

Martinez Elementary participated in H-E-B Texas Size Book and collected a total of 967 book. Mrs. Quinlan's Pre-K class collected 239 books total which earned them 1st place. The students will be able to have free choice in the library and the teacher will receive a Chick- Fil A meal and a leave early pass. It was great to see all the students coming together for a great cause.
Horror, Fantasy, Adventure, Oh My!
Facilitating meaningful experiences in the library fulfills me. This month, I facilitating a book tasting for the first time. Mrs. Rackley brought her students to the library, and we witnessed great conversations about good books. It turned out great! (Special shout out to all my library volunteers and aides for retrieving all the great reads!)
