Let’s Celebrate Walk-tober!
As someone who grew up walking ¾ mile everyday to his elementary school, I am happy to announce that Mountain View Elementary School will be participating in International Walk to School Day on October 6. If you or your child live in the neighborhoods of Belmont or Monte Vista we would love for them to participate!
Walk to School Day requires adults to walk with children. It is fine, even encouraged, for adults to walk groups of children to school. So if you can’t make it but your neighbor is walking their child please talk to your neighbor about walking both kids in.
To get an idea of how many students may be walking on October 6, please email Mr. Miller at dmiller@rockingham.k12.va.us with your name and your student’s name. If you would be willing to have another student walk with you please include your address so we can match you with students who need an adult to walk with!
Tobacco Cessation Program
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States. As a community, we can start to address this public health crisis by educating parents about addiction and giving them the tools they need to help their children end their dependence on nicotine products.
The Central Shenandoah Health District is excited to offer a three session Tobacco Cessation Education Program. This program will take place in the evening and will be offered virtually.
If you are interested in learning more about this program, please complete the survey linked here: https://redcap.link/6uvdfs8v
This program is open to anyone interested in learning about tobacco products and tools to quit. If you have any questions, please reach out to Katherine Smith, Health Educator, at katherine.smith@vdh.virginia.gov.
Interims/ Progress Reports
Toward the end of next week, we will be sending home a paper progress report with each student to let parents know how their child is doing getting reacclimated to 5 days of school each week! Since we have been focusing on practicing skills necessary for success in the classroom and building relationships with and among students, we have limited academic data at this point beyond our various initial assessments (PALS, LETRS, etc). In addition to sending home these reports, we will also send home specific directions for how parents can login to PowerSchool’s Parent Connect so you can keep up with how your child is doing across the various subject areas. As always, if you have a specific concern or question at any time, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
Additional LETRS Information from Central Office
Your K-5 student may come home using words like onset-rime and fricative. This vocabulary is helping students “break the code” to become a more proficient reader, writer, and speller. Your student may be tapping each sound within a word using their fingers to help them learn to decode and spell words. Your learner may also share about their use of magnetic letter tiles and felt circles in their classrooms. This provides a multi-sensory approach to connect speech to print.
In Grades PK-5, teachers are participating in the LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) professional development course of study which:
provides in-depth knowledge of the scope and sequence of how language/literacy skills/writing should be taught,
offers assessment best practice to inform direct instruction and intervention support,
guides planning for word recognition and comprehension, and
recommends differentiated instruction that serves all learners.
The first year of study addresses brain science, including the challenges of learning to read, an intentional focus on the speech sounds of English, a systematic approach to phonics, word recognition, spelling, and advanced decoding and word recognition skill development.
All teachers in grades K-5 introduced the sound wall as a foundational component of learning to read. The sound wall introduces the students to all 44 sounds in the English language and the multiple letter patterns that represent each of those sounds. The instructional emphasis is to develop decoding skills so students can read words with automaticity instead of memorizing words. This systematic approach also aids upper grade students in reading complex, multisyllabic words.
After two years of interrupted learning, it is critical that we identify any gaps and unfinished learning for all students so that teachers can meet them where they are, advance them to their maximum potential, and fill any gaps that have been widened or created as a result of our disrupted instruction. To determine the students’ instructional needs, we assessed all students using the LETRS phonics screener, the PAST (phonological awareness), and PALS (comprehension/fluency).
Using the data from the assessments, students will be participating in explicit, systematic instruction using the interactive phonics lesson plan so that they can become fluent readers, while applying their word knowledge to their writing and unfamiliar texts. As students progress as readers, the interactive phonics lesson plan will be used to address advanced vocabulary with more complex prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

From the School Nurse...
As COVID numbers in our area are rising we need to come together as a team to keep our children healthy and safe.

Have had a fever of 100.4 or higher in the last 24 hours
they have a bad cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, a runny nose that will soil more than 2 masks per day
Someone in your household is sick and being tested for COVID
If you think that you have been exposed to COVID DO NOT send the child to school without consulting the school first.
If you are unsure of household contact or have any questions if your child should attend school please call the office at 540-438-1965 and ask to speak with the Nurse.
Please refer to the following Daily Home Screening tool before sending your child.
MASKS
Face coverings are required to be worn indoors at all times, in accordance with the state public health order date August 12, 2021, other than mask breaks and designated eating times. Face coverings are to be worn regardless of social distancing. Teachers will help/train students, as needed, to wear face coverings according to these guidelines. Parents are responsible for providing students with face masks.
Students that do not comply with wearing a face covering will be sent to the office. If the issue cannot be resolved, the student will be placed in an area distanced from others to wait until a parent picks them up.
