From Your Principal, Mrs. Pass
While visiting the store to accept the check, we spoke with someone who was there from the company to help the store open. She told us how proud she was to work for Bob's because of the company's origins. The founder hurt his leg, and his doctor suggested a waterbed to help him heal. He went shopping for waterbeds and felt that the prices were way too high and the furniture companies were charging the consumer way too much so they could increase their profit margins significantly. That bothered the founder so much that he decided to open his own store in 1991 that featured consistently low prices.
This made me think about the 730 little minds in our building each day at EES. It is impossible to know the opportunities and challenges that will be presented in each one of our students' futures. But it is my hope that the skills we are providing them through the foundation we are building will allow them to take on any opportunity that comes their way or overcome any challenge. I want our students to understand the WHY. I want them to know WHY we all show up day in and day out and do our best. That's why if you are in our building in the morning, you will hear me share each day my personal hope and dream for each child at our school. I tell the students on the announcements every day: "My hope and dream for all of you today is that you gain the skills and the knowledge here to be happy, successful people who make this world a better place."
It's so important that we remember why we are learning what we are learning. At this age, literacy is our main focus because it impacts a student in all other areas of life; however, all the subjects we teach are vital because they are building a tool belt for our students to have ready when an opportunity or a challenge presents itself.
In the future, when a challenge presents itself to one of our students, I want him or her to know that if they don't like something, they have the tools to work toward changing it, just like the founder of Bob's did.
Let's have a great week together!
