Message from Superintendent Mueller
Good afternoon,
This is a pivotal time for our community, our state, and our nation.
Schools can be a powerful place to help students process and navigate events taking place in the larger world outside. It is our obligation to create safe spaces to explore and contemplate the essence of who we are. We see individuals in our community and across the world gathering to stand in solidarity for justice, to assume the responsibilities inherent to citizenship, and to foster a sense of agency and urgency. These gatherings have purpose and clarity. They are a call to action. They signal that what we have done to address systemic racism isn’t nearly enough. It is time to critically examine who we are as individuals, as members of a community, and as a nation. It is time to explore how our own action or inaction influences our community and the world around us.
Black Lives Matter.
This is not a political issue; it is an American issue directly related to our fundamental beliefs in equality. It should not be divisive.
As an academic institution, we have a responsibility to challenge our existing practices. We have important work to do in Coronado Unified School District. This work necessitates a professional response. We look forward to examining our current practices and adapting our approaches to incorporate explicit inclusivity and antiracism in our actions as a staff and as school community.
We can and we will get better. We have to.
Respectfully,
Karl Mueller
Congratulations Islanders, Class of 2020!
CUSD has been steadfast in navigating the pandemic with responsible and hopeful decision making. Throughout the Spring, our students have demonstrated resilience and fortitude in their response to school closures. We are thrilled that our seniors will have an opportunity to stand before our community, united as a class, eager to embrace the adventures which lie ahead.
Congratulations, Islander Class of 2020!
Caught Being Awesome!
As our educators, parents, and community come together to connect, challenge, and champion our students during our district closure, we are humbled by the outpouring of compliments during these trying times. What a positive testament to our CUSD family!
- Kim Quinlan was caught being awesome. "Kim took the lead as our front office staff and Instructional Aide staff worked Book Return at Coronado High School. Kim was here early every day to help set up and got everyone moving to clean up each day. She also arranged food for the group on two occasions. Book return would not have worked without her!"
- Amanda Gregory was caught being awesome. "Mrs. Gregory is an awesome CMS math teacher! Her weekly lessons were well organized with plenty of direct instruction via videos and written notes. She made herself available several times a week for Zoom calls with the students to help them with math concepts and assignments and check on their general well being during this challenging season. It is obvious that she not only loves to teach math but has a big heart for her students at CMS. Thanks, Mrs. Gregory!!!"
- Jennifer Landry was caught being awesome. "Jennifer has devoted COUNTLESS hours to provide support, trainings, and how-to videos to help all CUSD employees feel supported and ready to possibly take on Distance Learning in the fall. She has been a champion for all teachers, and makes teachers feel as if no question is too small, and is willing to work around anyone's time for one-on-one instruction. She does this all while still answering hundreds of daily emails, meeting with staff to help facilitate technology use, while navigating all other daily meetings and duties she has. Jennifer has been working far more than her contracted hours to help all teachers feel successful. Without Jennifer, distance learning would still feel like an impossible task. She has made the overwhelming thoughts of distance learning much less overwhelming for all who have interacted with her. Jennifer is an incredible person."
- Julia Braga was caught being awesome. "Julia is an amazing educator! Her sharp skills precede every task at her fingertips, producing applicable tools for elementary teachers at Village and Strand. Julia embraces learning by setting a standard of excellence, yet she does so with such a delightful, refreshing attitude! She is always open to others' input, the first to improve on her own already-awesome skills, laughing off and learning from her own mistakes. Julia is a model educator, and I'm so thankful to be working with her!"
- Tiffany Bouchard was caught being awesome. "Tiffany has been an incredible supportive leader for all of us CoSA and CTE teachers during distance learning. She attends many CTE, arts, state, district and school site Zoom meetings and takes meaningful notes to share with our department. She continues to add to a virtual document of CTE and Arts resources which she created for our department. She is always available and quickly answers any questions I might have about CTE, standards, department info, etc. Every one of her department meetings which she leads is concise, relevant and honors our time. I really appreciate all of the work she has been doing and with such positive and admirable energy at the end of the year. Not only does she champion our students, but she champions and challenges all of the CTE and CoSA instructors so that we can best serve our students. It is noticed, it is appreciated, and her energy inspires me to keep moving!"

Additionally, adults may pick up meals for students not present by printing and submitting this form at the time of pick-up. No meals will be distributed to parents/guardians without a child present or a form submitted at time of pick up due to state regulations.
Meals are available for all children aged 18 and under. Children are not required to be students of Coronado Unified School District. Our incredible Child Nutrition Service team members and volunteers have served over 72,800 meals since this program began. We are prepared to serve meals weekly to over 830 children (8,300 meals in total). As demands increase, we will continue to increase the number of meals we prepare in order to accommodate the needs of our entire school community. This is free for all children, regardless of meal status - please spread the word!
