Advocating for Equality Education

Encouraging Education of All, Regardless of Identity

The Inequality

Many people in society assume that, because gay marriage is now legal, LGBTQ+ individuals now have equal rights. However, I want to teach others about the injustices LGBTQ+ people face, even in lack of knowledge of who they are, as they vulnerable in our society today. Many people who are uneducated or prejudiced attack LGBTQ+ people violently and therefore transgender and non-hetero people are often very unsafe. As the Bible says in Hosea 4:6: “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.”

Faith and Advocacy

The Pope says: “If a person is gay and seeks the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge that person?”

Through the themes of Catholic Social Teaching, we are told to learn and love each other as children of God. Three of the most important themes present in learning about each other and encouraging equality for all of us, regardless of identity, include: Life and Dignity of the Human Person, Solidarity, and Call to Family, Community, and Participation.

Advocacy: The Trevor Project

The Trevor Project is a non-profit organization which advocates for education and harmony for all people to help raise awareness and prevention of suicide among LGBT+ youth. They advocate for awareness through fundraisers such as TrevorLive, a celebration for leaders advocating for LGBT+ rights and education. Advocacy is easy through volunteer work, outreach, or donations, most often.

This link encourages our politicians to sign the Equality Act, which would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other key antidiscrimination laws to provide protection against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
