Red Hill Lutheran 2021-2022
January Issue
A Message from Our Principal
Happy New Year! I hope our 2022 will be a blessed time together where we all continue to learn and grow together as a community of believers. Speaking of learning, I recently read a book on Dr. Martin Luther (1483-1546) titled: Martin Luther: The Man Who Rediscovered God and Changed the World by Eric Metaxas (@2017).
Despite having grown up in the Lutheran Church since birth I never knew what I learned from reading this book. I learned that the famous Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (whom our Holiday in January honors) was actually named for Dr. Martin Luther the protestant reformer who changed Europe and the world in the 1500’s through his desire to have open debate regarding God’s Word, The Bible and ultimately siding with a view of The Bible that was different from Rome’s. This hence led into the birth of our modern idea of freedom.
The same Dr. Martin Luther that my Christian denomination is named for, ‘Lutheran’, is also connected to the National Holiday in January named for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Interesting, but how did this honoring someone by changing your name to theirs come about? Author Eric Metaxas drew me into his book on Martin Luther in the preface to the book (attached excerpt) when he shared that Baptist Pastor Michael King traveled to a conference in Germany in 1934 and during his time was so moved by what he learned about who Dr. Martin Luther was and the profound impact his life and works had on not just the Christian Faith, but on people in terms of how they think about freedom and democracy. Pastor Michael King formally changed his name to Martin Luther King, and also changed the name of his young namesake son from Michael King Jr., to Martin Luther King, Jr. Yes, the MLK that is honored by our January holiday. If you are up for the challenge, check out this fascinating historical biography on Martin Luther. If you do I’d love to hear what you think of the book. It is always fun to learn new things – isn’t that what we are all about? Let’s hope so! Blessings & Happy New Year.
Blessings,
Dr. Paul Marquardt, Principal
A Message from Our Pastor
Dear Families of Red Hill Lutheran School,
I hope you had a wonderful and blessed Christmas and New Year! I echo the words of Saint Paul in his letter to the church in Philippi:
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5 because of your partnership in the gospel… (Philippians 1.3-4).
On behalf of the members and leadership of Red Hill Lutheran Church, we are thankful for your partnership in our ministry through Red Hill Lutheran School! As we begin a new year, I wanted to let you know about two opportunities that are upcoming at the church, and invite you to join us (if you do not have a church home) for these and any other ministries we offer!

National Lutheran Schools Week
National Lutheran Schools Week provides our network of more than 1,800 preschools, elementary schools and high schools with the public opportunity to proclaim and celebrate God’s work among us in Lutheran schools.
We thank God for the opportunity to provide excellent academic preparation for the children we serve. We are most grateful for the opportunity to share Jesus’ amazing love with children and their families.
National Lutheran Schools Week gives us an opportunity to proclaim these great blessings within the communities we serve. Our schools are amazing incubators for faithful witness of God’s love for us through Christ by teachers and students alike.

Parent Workshop Zoom
Wednesday, January 26th, 6:30 pm
During the workshop, Bonnie Bruce, owner and executive director, will go over the screening process, the results, and be available to answer any questions. The information evening will be designed to help parents understand the developmental process of learning.
Chancy and Bruce and the classroom teachers work in partnership with our families. The screening results along with your child’s winter assessment are two wonderful tools to help parents see where their children are in their development. Our winter assessments are scheduled to be delivered to you the last week of February.

JANUARY TEACHING SERIES: DISTINCT
If someone asked who you are, what would you say? Maybe you'd say your name. Or maybe you’d say, "I'm a musician. A basketball player. A friend. A daughter or son. I'm a human!" Those things might be true, but have you ever felt like you’re still figuring out who you are, what you’re good at, or why you’re here? In this 4-week series, the stories of Jesus and John the Baptist, and the words of Paul, will help us see why discovering who Jesus is helps us discover who we’re meant to be. Not only is Jesus distinct from anyone who has ever lived, but God made us distinct too, with distinct gifts we can use to serve God and others, and unique distinctions that are worth celebrating.
