Similes
Similes are a type of poem or way of writing using the words like, or as to compare things. We compared snowflakes to things that are crunchy, cold and white. An Example would be The snow is as white as a cloud. The snow is crunchy like a carrot. Then we made snowflakes out of coffee filters--(not mine, I can't spare a filter--I need my coffee!). What fun and what a mess!
Writing
We introduced our new poetry writing unit with an acrostic poem. An acrostic poem has the topic written vertically and each letter of the word must be a description of the word. this is challenging yet creative.
Martin Luther King Jr.
We read many stories about MLK Jr. We made a cloud and then on each strip of the rainbow, we wrote words that described him. The children came up with some amazing adjectives.
Buddies
We made a friendship chain with our buddies. We wrote on the back ways we can show kindness and be a good friend.
Poetry
As we finish writing our poems in writing, we grab a poetry book and read some published poems to get some ideas for our own writing.
Reading
We are practicing our strategies for when we get stuck on a word. We are telling our partner the strategy we used. Our partner is also coaching us to use a strategy if we can't figure a word out.
Math
We will be finishing up our short unit on measurement. One part of measurement is collecting data. The children picked a topic like favorite fruit. The student came up with their own choices like apples, strawberries and grapes. They went around the room asking children their survey question and recorded their data.
Math
We discussed out data when we finished circulating around the room. Dr. Scaletta happened to walk in and he got in on the questions!
Top Dog -Gwen
Gwen's favorite animal is a kitten. She loves to eat pizza. She is pawsome at school and snuggling. She wants to be a vet when she grows up!
Doggy Bag
1. Students can bring in their own poetry books to read. Please put your name on the inside so it doesn't get mixed in with mine.
2. Your child needs to learn to tie their own shoe. Now that we are switching from boots to shoes it is important that your child do this task on their own. Thank you!
