Team Notes

6th Grade

Happy holidays to everyone! What a FANTASTIC first semester we had, and we are looking forward to another AMAZING second semester with your kiddos! 6th Grade ILA will be starting “Unit 3: Exploration” when we return in January. We will focus on the following two essential questions: What drives a person to explore? What are the character traits of a successful explorer? Students will deepen their understanding of reading, writing, listening, and sharing in various learning activities that connect to the two essential questions. We will end the unit with a research project and presentation of a famous explorer. Please be aware that we will complete an Expository Composition Snapshot on January 20th, a Linguistic Snapshot on January 26th and 27th, and another Reading and Writing Snapshot on February 2nd.

In 6th grade World Cultures, students will continue learning about the history and cultures of Russia and the Eurasian Republics. We will then journey on to Sub-Saharan Africa, where students will explore the geography, history and cultures of African countries south of the Sahara Desert.

In the 3rd 9 weeks, 6th grade math will explore ordering real numbers, coordinate plane, and operations with integers. In Unit 7, students will learn how to sort positive and negative values in ascending and descending order. Students will also be learning about the cartesian coordinate system, and lastly students will learn how to calculate between math operations with integers. The Unit 7 test will be split into two parts: Students will be taking Unit 7 test (Part 1) on the block day of Jan 19/20 and Unit 7 test (Part 2) on the block day of Feb 9/10.

Welcome back, everyone! For our third nine weeks in Science, we will complete our study of Astronomy, and begin Physics! First, students will use their prior knowledge of energy to compare and contrast potential and kinetic energy. This will help them to build on a better understanding of balanced and unbalanced forces and motion. We will also be investigating force on an inclined plane, using distance and time measurements to calculate speed, and measuring and graphing changes in motion. It's going to be a busy unit!

Counselor Corner

As we begin the second semester of the school year, there are some important dates that the counselors would like you to be aware of once we return from winter break.

Our Frisco Family Services Food Drive will be one of the first big events of second semester, January 18 – 21, 2022. We will promote this on social media and through school messenger, along with other ways of donating, when the drive officially begins on January 18th, yet if you prefer to give now, just include in your notes that the gift is from Fowler Middle School. Thank you for supporting our community.
