Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral
Marcos V. 5th
History and Background
The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in Mexico City and is the largest and oldest cathedral in all of Latin America. Construction on this massive building began in 1567 and was not completed until 1788. This cathedral is so large that over the years the 127,000 ton structure has began to sink into the soft soil. This Cathedral contains the second highest amount of Catholic artifacts, while only Vatican City holds more. This building is truly a work of art on the inside and on the outside. When entering the Cathedral you are overwhelmed by the amount of art, architectural design, and fine metals. The Metropolitan Cathedral is, without a doubt, one of Mexico City's most prized possessions.
