Swing Into Spring

April was a busy month in second grade. Students have been busy learning Y as the long "e" sound, R-controlled vowels, numerous vowel diphthongs, and layering all of these important decoding ingredients together. Reading My Father's Dragon is providing a guided book study of the fantasy genre and an introduction to challenging vocabulary. Whenever you visit LS, please check out the Lorax Forest in the second grade stairwell. It is a "replanting" of the environment as described in the book, complete with student-selected tree facts. Students celebrated Earth Day by participating in various conservation activities outside. In math, second graders have been using their knowledge of fractions by applying it to time, linear measurement, creating a weather graph, and most recently, capacity. Second grade lepidopterists have been recording observations of the life cycle of our 2 butterfly groups. As the Painted Lady caterpillars become adult butterflies, we will be discussing butterfly anatomy and what life is like for these interesting insects. We hope to have a butterfly release ceremony with our visitors on Grandparents Day!

The JEM program was experienced by second graders in several different ways. In addition to hosting, the children created cards, performed at the JEM assembly, shared their study of local Native Americans, learned cultural aspects of India and Russia, and were able to ask the visitors questions about growing up in another part of the world. Perhaps the best part was simply having the JEM students hang out and become friends with second graders on the LS playground!
