Vose Owl Notes
Family Newsletter for Vose Elementary- May 2021
Principals' Message:
Hello Vose families!
Can you believe it- we are somehow at the end of the school year! And what a year it has been! I think we can say that most of us won't forget this last year for the rest of our lives for so many reasons, some positive, some not so positive. At Vose we are grateful you have trusted us with your most precious children as we have navigated so many unknowns together. Your partnership has been invaluable as parents and families have become co-teachers throughout most of this crazy and unexpected adventure in online learning and more.
VOSE END OF YEAR PARENT SURVEY: As we move towards hopefully a more "normal" school experience next year and beyond, we want to gather your input and feedback so we can move forward to learn and grow from the lessons of this last year. Please take a few minutes to complete this Parent Survey for Vose families.
INCOMING PRE-K, KINDERGARTENERS & DUAL LANGUAGE PARENT SURVEY: As we are planning and preparing for the fall, we would like to find out how many potential incoming Pre-K and Kindergarteners we have in our community. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey in ENGLISH or in SPANISH if you have a child who will be 4 years old by September 1, 2021 and would therefore qualify to APPLY for our PreK program at Vose, and/or if you have or know of a child who will be 5 years old by September 1, 2021 and would therefore qualify to REGISTER for Kindergarten.
We also would like to know if you are interested in applying for our Dual Language Spanish Immersion program for incoming Kindergarteners. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey in ENGLISH or in SPANISH. The program provides a bilingual education for Kindergarten - 5th grade students who apply and are selected through a lottery. We ask that families commit to staying in the program for the full 6 years of K-5th grades so their child has the full benefit of becoming bilingual in Spanish and English. Applications are available on the Vose website. Please email Angela_Baker@beaverton.k12.or.us for more information about our Dual Immersion Program or go to our Vose school website here: https://vose.beaverton.k12.or.us/academics/dual-immersion-program.

Any family using a district issued hotspot will need to return the hotspot as soon as the school year ends.
Any student whose device is damaged should send an email to shd@beaverton.k12.or.us that includes the following information as soon as possible. Name, Contact information (phone number), School, Student ID, Description of the issue.
Thanks in advance for gathering all district and school iPads, Chromebooks with stylus, chargers, hotspot, books and other materials and return them to school...books can be returned now and devices can be returned after the end of the last day of school on June 18th. Teachers and staff have tried to make sure students have had lots of access to books through distributions, Book Bus, Library checkout, etc. Because of this Beaverton school and classroom libraries are missing tens of thousands of books! In order to have as many books accessible to students as possible, we are asking for your help in returning books this May and June! All materials gathered will prevent charges being incurred by families and also will help the district save money to purchase new devices and books rather than replace lost materials.
With appreciation,

Beaverton City Library Summer Programs
Summer Reading is right around the corner! We’ve made some changes to the program to make it easier for kids and families.
Quick Summary (for those who don’t have a chance to read the entire message):
Beaverton City Library’s Summer Reading Program starts June 1st! Babies, kids, and teens will get to choose a free book after they read, listen, and learn for 15 hours this summer. Encourage your students to read this summer, and share the attached Reading Log (English and Spanish). Visit the library or www.BeavertonLibrary.org/SRP for details.
Share this quick (1:32 min.) teaser video with students and families: https://youtu.be/1Eo69NWzE0I
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Full Summer Reading Program information:
How SRP works this year
Beaverton City Library is encouraging babies, kids and teens to read, listen, and learn for 15 hours this summer. There is no need to register, just keep track of their time, and once they reach 15 hours, come to the library to pick out a free book.
What counts as “reading, listening, and learning”?
Reading is just what it sounds like—reading books, e-books, graphic novels and comic books, reading newspapers, magazines, fiction, non-fiction, poetry. The traditional reading you probably remember from past Summer Reading Programs.
Listening also counts! Having an adult or older child read aloud to a child, listening to audiobooks, and Tumblebooks. This is a great way for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to complete the Summer Reading program, too! (Not to mention busy teen/adults who listen to audiobooks in the car!)
Learning is another way of saying Family Activities: Kids taking time to do things with their families like building a blanket fort, or experimenting with rolling toy cars down ramps, and just taking time to talk to each other to reflect on the day are wonderful ways of learning, and we want to encourage families to take the time to do things together. Thus we’ve included family activities as a way to complete the summer reading program to get a new book.
How can my students get a Reading log?
Starting June 1 reading logs are available at the library, or our website, or share the one I’ve attached (here it in Spanish). Folks can also create their own reading log to keep track of their 15 hours. Let me know if you’d like printed logs delivered to your school.
Free Book
When complete, kids and teens will get to pick a brand new free book from the library—there will be lots of choices at different levels with fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, activity books, and more!
What, no coupons? Not this year—In 2021 we are focusing our summer reading program on getting books into the community, and helping our local business partners to recover economically rather than asking for sponsorship.
Events and Activities
This summer we’ll host a mix of online events and in-person events, and continue Activities to Go.
All our in-person events will be outdoors, masks required, and with stations set up for social distancing.
Visit our events calendar, or see our program flyer for all the events, and to find out how to register for online and in-person events.
How to tell Students/Families
Feel free to share any of our Summer Reading Program posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We’ll be posting through the summer.
Share this quick (1:32 min.) teaser video with students and families: https://youtu.be/1Eo69NWzE0I
Continue to tell your students that the public library is the place to pick out books (and movies, and video games), and borrow them for free, AND there’s lots of stuff to do.
Questions?
Whew! That was a lot of information. Please let me know what questions you have, or that come up for you. I’ll do everything I can to help get you answers!
Thank you for all you do to help keep kids excited about reading and learning through the whole year,

BINAXNow COVID-19 Testing at School Sites
The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) supports COVID-19 testing in public and private K-12 schools in Oregon for students and staff who display symptoms of COVID-19. The Beaverton School District has registered to have Abbott BinaxNOW rapid antigen testing available for students and staff who develop primary symptoms of COVID-19 at school. Primary symptoms of Covid-19 include:
New or different than usual shortness of breath
New or different than usual coughing
Fever of 100.4 or higher
New loss of taste or smell.
The Abbott BinaxNOW test will only be administered to students who have consent from their parent(s) or legal guardian on file. The student must be capable and willing to perform a nasal swab test independently. The parent(s) or guardian can decline testing and opt to test their child with a healthcare provider. If there is any doubt as to whether a specimen may be safely self-collected by an individual, they should be referred to their healthcare provider for COVID-19 testing. Positive test results will be shared with the Local Public Health Authority to assist in contact tracing.
If you would like your child to participate in this testing program, please complete and return the consent form to the school office. You can find the consent form at this link: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/public-safety/emergency-preparedness/coronavirus/return-to-in-person-instruction/covid-19-health-safety-guidance under the COVID-19 Testing Information. For further information on the Abbot BinaxNOW rapid antigen test see the following link: FDA information on BinaxNOW test.
MENTAL HEALTH & WASHINGTON COUNTY SERVICES
We know that these are stressful times for everyone. Below are some updates from our community regarding accessing behavioral health and other basic county services.
If you are already connected to a mental health provider, please contact them first for support. You can also reach out to other resources listed on the BSD Community Resources page.
Updates to all Washington County public services can be found here: https://www.co.washington.or.us/CAO/status-of-county-services.cfm
OUTDOOR FACILITIES AND SCHOOL GROUNDS
Please know that during our in-person Hybrid Instruction time (7:45 - 3:30pm at Vose), our Beaverton School District outdoor school facilities — playgrounds, fields, tracks and paths — will be closed to the general public for the safety of our students and staff. Vose's outdoor facilities will be closed to the general public until at least 3:30 pm every school day due to our PreK operating onsite until then each day.
Turf fields and stadiums remain closed for any community use. Tennis courts are open for use by THPRD and in accordance with existing agreements.
After school hours (7:30am-3:30pm), families are welcome to use playgrounds, fields, tracks, and paths after in-person instruction and do so at their own risk. Please be mindful and respectful to staff that continue to work in the buildings after in-person instruction, and our in-person PreK program with students.
Please note that playground equipment will NOT be sanitized by school staff. Playground visitors are recommended to take precautions for health and safety.
- Follow state guidelines on outdoor recreation activities and face coverings.
- Wash hands before and after visiting the playground.
- Maintain physical distancing of at least 6 feet from people outside your immediate household.
- Bring hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes for use on surfaces you touch.
- Stay home if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19. Symptoms include cough, fever and shortness of breath.

Oregon Launches “Find Child Care Oregon,” a New Child Care Referral Database
Oregon’s child care referral database, “Find Child Care Oregon,” was updated on Nov. 16, 2020. The database is used to collect and track child care program information and provide families with child care referrals. The new database includes improvements for user experience and replaces the former national database, NACCRRAware, a system used statewide for the last 15 years.
The system updates include the following changes:
Provide families with more information and customized results for child care programs in their area.
Give providers direct access to update program information (coming in 2021).
Support data alignment with partner applications and provide partners with limited access to system reports.
