Hour of Code Monday

SMS students! We are going to participate in the Hour of Code on Monday, December 15th. The Hour of Code is a global program designed to engage all students in computer science learning activities. Each team has a designated teacher that will devote their class period to intro to coding activities. You can find out more here. Happy Coding!!

Christmas Lunch

The SCSD2 Food and Nutrition Department invites all students and staff to enjoy a special Christmas lunch on Tuesday, December 15th. The menu will include baked ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, fruit, roll and butter, and an ice cream sandwich!

SCSD2 Presents at Apple, Inc.

Congratulations to Dr. Slaton, Mrs. Slaton, Mr. Doriot, and Miss Nass for their awesome presentation at Apple, Inc. in Cupertino, California earlier this week. The team was selected to share research about our district professional development portal (#growscott2). The two-day event included work with renowned educational researchers and a presentation in front of Apple Education leadership. A special shout out goes out to Mrs. Anderkin, Mrs. Boley, Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Copple, Mr. Craig, Mr. Jeffries, Mrs. Fryfogle, and Mrs. Zeigenbein for participating in our project!

Semester News

We end our first semester on Friday, December 18th. There will be no extension for any late work after this time. Teachers will finish assessing work and will finalize grades on Monday, January 4th (Teacher Records' Day). Report cards will be mailed to all parents/guardians by the end of that week.

Students start second semester on Tuesday, January 5th. It will be a B day. Eighth graders will not change schedules. Sixth graders will start Art (in their PE period) and seventh graders will start PE (in their Art period.)

Students wishing to change FROM a music elective TO Inquiry can do so at the end of the semester. If you want to move from choir or band to inquiry, you need to pick up a change request in the office and get it signed and returned by the end of school Friday, December 18th. Due to the nature of our curriculum, students may not ADD band or choir mid year. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Nass.

We are still on track to collect devices for Christmas break. The SCSD2 Tech Department will be updating iPads to prepare them for the spring 2016 ISTEP+ exam. iPads will be collected during Connect on Friday, December 18th. If you are not going to be at school on the 18th, you'll need to turn in your iPad BEFORE that day. We will not be collecting chargers/cords. Only iPads. To help the tech crew (Santa, Rudolph, Frosty, and the Grinch), please make sure your iPad is fully charged and that the screen is clean. Thanks!

More TECH news: The tech team is reporting that several students are damaging their iPads with ill fitting earbud/earphone jacks. If you put in jack and it gets stuck, bring the iPad to the MC. The crew will use special tools to remove the jack. You are responsible for any damage caused by removing a stuck jack.

And even more TECH news: We are in the process of transitioning all students to new Harmony accounts! Our goal is to have everyone open new accounts next week. We'll share more in Connect!

Good Luck, Mr. Pedigo!

Congratulations to Mr. Pedigo! Mr. Pedigo has accepted a position with the Jefferson County Schools. He'll be teaching high school social studies at PRP High School in Louisville and starting training for an administrative position in the district. Mr. Bulington is substituting for Mr. Pedigo at this time.

Thanks to Mr. Pedigo for his five years of service at SMS!

Riley Tree Challenge

Thanks to the students and staff that donated for the Riley Tree Challenge! SMS raised $541.15 for Riley Children's Hospital. The top donating team was the Cool Rays... and they will enjoy a "Snow Ball" in January. (A Snow Ball is a short team party with food and music!)

Band Concert Tuesday

We've got another opportunity to hear some great music next week! The SMS Bands will perform their Holiday Concert on Tuesday, Dec. 15th at 7:00 PM in the SMS west gym. The public is invited to this free, one hour performance!

Thanks to the SMS Choirs for their wonderful concert performance last night! Bravo!

Snow Business

We're expecting RECORD high temperatures this weekend so naturally it is time to talk about SNOW! Here is a quick reminder of how we roll in bad weather. Safety of our students and staff is very important. If weather conditions cause hazardous travel (ice, snow, fog, etc.), SCSD2 may delay or cancel school.

Superintendent Slaton will send a School Messenger phone message to all households very early on the morning of any weather issue. He will make the call as soon as the decision is made. Typically this is around 6:00 AM. Any call will be either for a 2-hour delay or for a cancellation.

If we have a delay, it will always be for two hours. We will start at 10:05 sharp. Buses will run two hours after the normal time. Be patient waiting for buses when the weather is bad! All classes meet on a delay day but they are shorter in length. If we cancel school, we will make the day up later in the year. We also cancel SMS sports and clubs on cancellation days.

Besides School Messenger calls, you can find out school information on I105.3 radio and on local tv news stations. Don't forget the 2! We are SCSD2! Not SCSD1 or Scott County, KY!!
