Meet the Pre-Calculus and AP Statistics/Dual Credit Teachers:
Pre-Calculus
The Pre-Calculus team consists of Fred Lewis, Mary Gillespie, and Caleb Marburger. Mrs. Gillespie has been teaching for 18 years and is a proud graduate of FHS and Texas A & M. She received her Master's Degree from the University of Houston. After school, you will find her guiding our UIL Math, Number Sense, and Calculator teams to success. Coach Marburger has been teaching for four years. He coaches basketball and baseball and is an avid Dallas Cowboys fan! Mr. Lewis has been teaching for seven years and is new to FHS this year. He coaches Academic Decathlon and is an excellent addition to our math department. The Pre-Calculus team is working hard to prepare our students to be college-ready and successful in their future endeavors.
AP Statistics and Dual Credit College Algebra/Math for Business and Social Sciences
Jerry Linch is our AP Statistics and Dual Credit College Algebra/Math for Business and Social Sciences teacher. Mr. Linch has been teaching for 21 years, 16 of those at FHS. Mr. Linch is a proud graduate of the University of Nebraska where he received degrees in Math and Actuarial Science, and he obtained his Master's Degree in Statistics from the University of Houston Clear Lake. Mr. Linch worked as an actuary for many years, but ultimately decided that teaching was the field he preferred. Mr. Linch is a vital part of our math department! He makes sure that his students are ready for the mathematics courses they will be pursuing in college!

Math Students Spread Christmas Cheer!
Caleb Anslow, Audrey Sweeney, McKinley Young
Nicholas Smith, Sam Smith, Parker O’Leary
Students in Mrs. Barnell's class and Mrs. Nickerson's class participated in the NTHS/CTE Santa Project this year. Students bought and wrapped gifts for an area elementary school. The students enjoyed taking a small break from math to bring a little cheer to children who are less fortunate. We would like to thank the CTE classes, Mrs. Novak, and Mrs. Smith for allowing all students/departments at the high school to participate in such a rewarding project.

Adopt a Grant time in FISD!
FHS Math Department has Several Grants up for Adoption!
The FHS Math Department wrote several grants that are currently up for adoption from the FISD Education Foundation. Grants are for STEM Makerspace carts, the supplies to fill those carts, IXL Math Practice software, Nearpod Interactive Math software, Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards, Design Lab furniture, 3D pens, and technology for our Applied Math class. If you would like to support the department by adopting a grant, please go to the Education Foundation website listed below and search by High School, Math, a teacher's name, or by one of the keywords above. What's Happening Around the Math Department?
Students are Studying for Semester Exams
The Math Department is wrapping up the second nine weeks and the first semester! Please make sure all make-up work, quizzes, and tests are completed before students leave for the break on December 16th. And, don't forget to study for those semester exams! You can find the exam schedule listed below and on the FHS website. Thank you!
Geometry Students Discover the Triangle Inequality Theorem
Students in Geometry and Pre-AP Geometry recently did a discovery activity to find the Triangle Inequality Theorem. Students were given spaghetti noodles and an exploratory worksheet to discover and prove the theorem. By the end of class, students were able to apply the theorem to the problems given to them. Who knew spaghetti noodles could help you learn math?!?
UIL Math, Number Sense, and Calculator Team Members Practice Afterschool
Mrs. Gillespie has had a full classroom of students after school this month for UIL Practice. The teams are hoping to bring home medals at the district, region, and state level competitions. If you think you might be interested in joining the team, see Mrs. Gillespie in room 2003!
