I hope everyone enjoyed their extended break. It's nice to have a little down time before we finish this first quarter which will be here in a couple of weeks. We've got a lot going on this week so please prepare in advance. Some reminders for this week:

  • Monday, September 26th-Walking Taco orders due today by 4 PM. See newsletter for information.
  • Tuesday, September 27th--School picture day. Your child should have brought home the forms or you can order online. (enter code: 71545Y to order online @
  • Thursday--4th Grade UNK Nebraska Kid Fitness and Nutrition Day 8:30-2:30 pm
  • Friday--Flu Vaccinations will be given in the afternoon IF paperwork is completed. Your child brought home a form from school. If you need another one, see the newsletter tab called Flu Consent Form and you can print your own.
  • Friday-Fundraiser packets are due today. Please look at the newsletter information to see our progress so far. Our goal is to raise $30,000. Reminder: If you'd rather your child not fundraise, you can always donate money to our Kenwood PTO instead.

Also, continue to encourage your child to read daily. We will celebrate the readers who completed a percentage of their monthly goals each quarter. The quarter ends on October 13th so I'd suggest you get into a nightly routine of reading before bedtime.

The PTO will be holding a Walking Taco Night on October 4th in conjunction with the Kearney High School volleyball game. More information is shared below to order your walking tacos in advance which is necessary for them to get the correct amount of food needed. A sign up genius will go out after the orders are in for anyone wanting to help support this event.

There have been several parents asking about Kenwood t shirts. The PTO will be sending out information about the t shirt orders soon.

Have a great week!

Second Step-Weekly Focus-Focusing Attention

Learning happens every day at Kenwood. An important skill for learning is focusing attention. When we focus our attention we use our ears, our eyes, and our brain! This week, put on your attent-0-scopes and notice how they help you listen and learn.

Pacing Guides

Parents, here are the pacing guides for each grade level in the core subject areas in case you are interested in knowing when particular skills will be taught.

Parents are invited to lunch BUT we ask that you contact the school ahead of time so we can inform the Bearcat Diner of your order or other changes in schedules. Lunch times are also found on the Kenwood website. The month of May will be off limits as there are too many schedule conflicts to organize and work around so if you plan on coming, please do so before then. If you choose to bring fast food or other restaurant types of food, we will have you eat in the office or conference room area as it causes hard feelings for those who don't have those options.

Week of September 19th-20th

It was a long week for students and teachers as we held parent-teacher conference night along with our book fair. Teachers will get compensated for these extra hours as students do not have school this Wednesday through Friday. Our teachers will have a professional development day on Wednesday so you may see some vehicles at the school throughout the day. We will be holding several meetings for our Kenwood staff and grade levels throughout the district. This time is important for our teachers to collaborate with other teachers at Kenwood and in their grade levels across the Kearney Public School system.

I want to thank all of you who have attended conferences already BUT we do have ONE more night of conferences--Monday, September 19th. Please sign up if you haven't OR you can contact Mrs. Fedderson and she can sign you up as well. While you are here, stop by the library. Our students love to purchase books and we love that parents are supporting their children's reading at home as well as at school.

Our fundraiser kick off was held on Friday afternoon. Your child has a packet that should've made it home. If not, I'm sure they'll bring it home after school on Monday. We ask that students do not go door to door unless the parent is with them. The money is due right away so they can write a check to Kenwood PTO. PLEASE make sure that your child's name is on the packet sheet and orders will be coming in November. This is our only BIG fundraiser of the year and it helps purchase one extra field trip per grade level and a lot of other extras for our school. Families can also choose not to fundraise and that's okay. If you'd rather donate directly to the PTO, you can make checks out to the Kenwood PTO. Thank you in advance for your support.

I want to share a BIG SHOUT OUT to our Kenwood PTO and parents as our staff has been spoiled with amazing food during our nights of conferences. We had a taco bar and tailgate food and we truly feel the love. Thanks again for all who donated and for our wonderful gals who organize, clean, and pick up the goodies at the end of the night. Your service to our school and our staff has not gone unnoticed! YOU ROCK!

That's it for this week. Have a great five day weekend!

This turned out amazing! Thank you to Mrs. Raffaeli, Kenwood art teacher, for working with all Kenwood students on this "TEAM" art mural. Each hand has specific details of each individual student of our school. Our theme this year is just that "Together Everyone Achieves More" and this demonstrates that when we do work together, it can make a beautiful piece of art! I absolutely love this and how awesome it turned out! Come see it by our art room!

Week of September 12th-16th

Tuesday, September 13: Conferences and Book Fair 4-9 (in person or zoom)

Thursday, September 15: Conferences and Book Fair 4-8:30 (in person or zoom)

Friday, September 16:

  • Healthy Snack Sales-5th graders asked to provide Healthy Snacks (no cookies, potato chips, sugary treats) All students bring quarters to purchase a snack. Any leftover snacks can be purchased after school.
  • Fundraiser Kick Off-students will bring home packets. They are encouraged NOT to go door to door or to anyone they do not know. You can choose not to participate and you can choose to donate to the PTO.

Reminders to our students and parents last week:

  1. PERSONAL ITEMS Students are requested to not bring their toys or equipment of a personal nature to school, unless specifically requested by the teacher. They may be a distraction to learning and may become lost or broken, and the school cannot assume responsibility to replace these items. Students are discouraged from bringing valuables and large amounts of money to school. Students are responsible for the safekeeping of their possessions and for other items which have been assigned to their care.
  2. 11th Street Crosswalk-A reminder that we do not have supervision in the morning at this crosswalk. I'd encourage parents to bring students to school as the traffic is super busy in the morning.

Second Step Weekly Focus-Listening

At Kenwood, we all work hard to be the best learners we can be. One skill for learning is to listen with attention. When we listen with attention, our eyes are watching the speaker, our ears are listening, our voices are quiet, and we're still. This week, practice being a great listener every day!

The Week of September 6th-9th

I hope you all had a great three day weekend. The weather was definitely beautiful. We are now into the swing of things here at school. In fact, we have parent-teacher conferences coming up next week for two days and the week after we have one day. We'd love to get all students represented at these conferences. You can choose to come in person or use a zoom link to attend from home. We do ask that if you're at home to find a quiet place for you to focus on the task at hand as we know things can get quite hectic. The book fair is also taking place. More information will be shared later.

  1. The playground is off limits in the morning and after school until after 4:00 PM. There were students dropped off early who are not Run Club or who finish early from Run Club and they are playing on the equipment. Please do not drop off your child before 7:35 AM and reinforce to your runners that when they are finished, they wait for the doors to open or continue running.
  2. Cell phones/smart watches and devices- per page 9 in the KPS Parent handbook: "Students are not allowed to use cell phones or smart watches/devices for calls or for text messaging in the school building. In the event that cell phones or smart watches/devices are brought to school, they must be turned off and left in the student's locker. Misuse of a cell phone or smart watches/devices will result in the confiscation of the phone or watch/device. Parents must pick up the cell phone or watch/device from the office at the end of the school day."
  3. INVITATIONS/TREATS/GIFTS (page 20 KPS Parent Handbook) Children are not allowed to bring invitations or treats to be given out to classmates at school. The fact that not all students could provide treats and the possibility of causing ill feelings as a result, is of primary concern in making this rule, as well as concern for food allergies and a need for emphasis on good nutrition. Sending flowers, balloon bouquets and other gifts to students while they are at school is also discouraged, and these items will be held in the school office until the end of the school day.

I thank you for you reinforcement of these rules so we can maintain a successful learning environment for your children. It never hurts to reinforce it at school and at home. Thanks again!

Talk about the key of flexibility--this is our first group of Kenwood Cougars of the Week! As you can see they don't have certificates in their hands YET. Our district's technology was down all day so we couldn't print them off. They handled it like a charm. Congratulations to these Cougars of the Week!

Second Step Weekly Focus-Be Responsible

One rule we have at Kenwood is “Be Responsible” .Being responsible helps make our school a place where everyone can learn. When we’re responsible, we can be trusted to do the right thing. We help others. We clean up our messes. We admit when we make mistakes or do the wrong thing. We focus on our schoolwork. This week, think about how you can be responsible and do the right thing in class, in the lunchroom, and out at recess.
