Getting Started

Gather information from your students about what their interests are and what types of books they like to read. Use this information to guide your search for quality literature.

Don't forget the "oldies" as you are looking for newer titles to peak their interests.

Model what good readers do: establish a purpose, ask literal questions, monitor and adjust, make inferences, make connections.

Good readers make good writers.

Teach students how to read a book as writers. Model, Examine, Model. Students need to understand the many purposes of books - for enjoyment, to learn about a topic or how to write. Comment on how you notice things like characters, the problem, descriptive words and punctuation.
