Volume 2 ~ Issue 9 ~ Week of September 10, 2023

Big picture
On September 11, 2001, a terrorist attack occurred which resulted in the death of 2,977 Americans across New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania. On that tragic day, ordinary Americans performed extraordinary acts of heroism. Firefighters and police officers rushed into crumbling buildings and raging fires to save others. EMTs, construction workers, colleagues, and strangers tended to the wounded. Passengers and crew members gave their lives to thwart another attack. On this Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, we pay tribute to the heroes and victims who lost their lives on September 11, and we recommit ourselves to the spirit of unity, patriotism, and service that carried our Nation through in the days that followed.

Most of us adults can remember the exact moment where we were when this attack happened, but none of our Viking students were even born yet. Regardless, it's important to learn about this tragic moment in history, especially now when we need to stand united more than ever. This morning during PA announcements, we will be doing a moment of silence to honor the lives lost that day.

Viking Spotlight: Our Fall Sports Teams πŸ€βšΎπŸ₯Ž

We kicked off our fall sports this past Saturday with games in basketball, softball, and baseball. While we were unable to secure a "W", I am still so proud of how hard our Vikings worked each game! The varsity basketball team almost won a nail-biter of a game that came down to the last seconds vs. RDR! The JV basketball team put up a valiant effort against Feaster! Our softball team put 9 runs on the board, but it wasn't enough to fend off Hawking Charter this time. Shout out to the baseball team whose game vs. Chula Vista Middle ended in a 2-2 tie...so close to a win! I know we will work out the kinks this week and come out even stronger this Saturday!

Message from the Principal πŸ’›

We had a good turnout at Viking Shadow Day last Friday, thank you to the parents who were able to attend! Our next Viking Shadow Day is Friday, November 3rd, so mark your calendars and we hope to see you there!

We have our Movie Spirit Week and our Fall Sports Rally this week! I'm excited to see the outfits of the students who participate and earn 5-star points! There is also a super tight race between Advisory classes for which class has the most points per person in their Advisory! The top 3 are Mrs. Dow, Ms. Mohamed, and Mrs. Trejo's advisory classes, but it's still anybody's game as you can earn spirit points EVERY day this week!! There is even an advisory challenge to earn 25 points for your advisory class, so be sure to participate this week, Vikings!!

We have our final Makeup Picture Day of the year this Friday, September 15th. If you have not taken your ID and Yearbook picture yet, you will be pulled out of PE that day to go take it and get your ID card.

This Saturday is our last Saturday Academy before break...don't forget to take advantage of the opportunity to get academic support and/or make up absences and tardies. Anyone can attend, you don't have to receive an invite! Saturday Academy starts at 8am and ends at 12pm...bring water and some snacks!

Let's make it a great week, Vikings!!

Take care,

Ms. Scott

In addition, MVA Teachers, Counselors, and Staff members are here to support students, so don't be afraid to ask for help!

The SUHSD District Suicide Prevention Council invites staff, parents, guardians, caretakers, and community members to the 2023 Suicide Prevention Community Forum on Thursday, September 21st at Olympian High. See the flyer below for more info!
