Martin's Memos

Volume 2, Issue 26: March 15, 2019

This Week

Please read the information in our newsletter below and let me know if you have any questions. Look for an article about the opening of the Avondale GATE Magnet School in the Rochester Post (C&G) in the next few weeks!

Also, you will notice some changes in your child's report card envelope this trimester - a report card narrative. These will come home TODAY in your child's Friday Folder. Please take out all papers and sign the envelope and return it.

Have a great weekend!

-Ms. Kate Martin

Parents and Family: Come in to View Enrichment Presentations!

Click here to sign up to come to our first ever "Passion Project Conference"! Come to hear about the students' latest passion/enrichment project topic and research!

It will occur from approximately 2:55-3:20 on Tuesday 3/19, Wednesday 3/20, Thursday 3/21 in Ms. Martin's classroom at Woodland Elementary. Parents, you can see which day your child is presenting on this document as well. Sign up for one presentation to view per slot by typing in your first name. Max of 5 people per group, please.

SOC Testing Volunteers Still Needed!

Please consider volunteering, especially on 3/20 and 3/27 in the afternoon. I'd like to have at least 4 parent volunteers on those 2 days. This is when we have at least 40+ families coming in to test to get into the GATE program. Parent volunteers will be helping to check families in and escort the parents to the waiting area and the students to the testing rooms. Parents also help make sure that when students are done testing they find their parent.

Important GATE Middle School Reminder

I wanted to clarify a few things that have come up with Avondale Middle School starting their scheduling:

-We have our own classes that will be provided at Meadows/GATE. Please refer to the slide from our Meadows presentation below. Any class with the "GATE" after it will be provided by us.

-The ONLY classes 6th graders might go to AMS for are: Concert Band 6, French 6, and Algebra 1 (if they tested into it).

-GATE is only offering 2 tracks - the Non-Band track and the Band track. Students that are interested in doing the Band track need to complete and return the pink sheet they received earlier this week. We are not offering choir, although music will be an option at our building.

This would also be a great time to review the "Move to Meadows" Presentation that was given to current families earlier this year. It has been linked in my newsletter since the presentation, but I've moved it up for your convenience.

We will start our own scheduling process and will provide more information after spring break.

Positivity Project - P2

This week's character strength is: Love of Learning

Developing a love of learning is highly beneficial for an individual. It means that they are intrinsically motivated to deepen their existing skills and abilities, or learn something completely new. Since intrinsically motivated action is correlated with positive emotions, those who act on their love of learning may also have enhanced mental and physical health.
