Build a Better World During Reading Week!
1. The Reading Week theme will be the same as the following Summer Reading Program theme. For 2017, it's "Build a Better World." This will foster partnerships between school and public libraries.
2. While Reading Week traditionally ran the week before April vacation, April is now filled with PARCC testing and SLO final assessments. If you haven't already done so, we encourage schools to schedule their Reading Weeks in May after the Kids' Read Across Rhode Island kickoff (see below). For 2017, these are the weeks of May 15 and May 22.
3. Our organizations can use Reading Week as a time to collect testimonials from students, teachers, and parents on the importance of libraries. For 2017, SLRI members can ask their families how libraries and/or books have helped Build a Better World.
4. No more reinventing the wheel - the Reading Week Committee can provide ideas for books and activities. Look for suggestions later this month. Schools are still welcome, of course, to create their own ways to celebrate the week.
Request Reading Week Artwork
Slogan images in English and Spanish, as well as several clipart images, are available to school libraries and classrooms for promoting Reading Week. Image requests will be accepted through this survey until Sunday, March 19. Images will be emailed to you by March 24.
ESSA-press Yourself
School Library Month is around the corner, and we want to get SLRI messaging out, especially as it pertains to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). How can you help? Lots of ways.
1. Respond to our annual survey; we will compare data to last year and publicize trends
2. Craft your "elevator speech" for different audiences. It's crucial to include real anecdotes and/or data ... what compelling stories can you share in a couple of sentences?
3. Contact your state legislators. We will be posting email text that you can simply copy and paste. You may also want to invite them to visit your library and see it in action.
4. Contribute to the Kickstarter campaign to finance professionally produced videos to use as PSAs. The campaign will officially open March 10; conference attendees will be able to view the campaign video starring SLRI members.
Save Me a Seat at KRARI
OLIS, the RI Center for the Book, and the Kids Reading Across RI committee is pleased to announce the 2017 Kids Reading Across RI selection is save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan.
More information will be coming soon, but mark your calendar for the May 13 kickoff event with the authors at the State House.
Copies of Save Me a Seat are available to school libraries and classrooms interested in hosting a KRARI book discussion. These books will be yours to keep, and while there is no limit on how many you request, please thoughtfully consider the number of books you will need to run an effective book club/discussion.
Please submit your request online by March 24. Book sets will be delivered to your school in April. If you will be at the SLRI conference on March 10, you may request to pick up your book set from Kate Lentz at the RI Center for the Book exhibit table.
