GMS Principal's Corner

January 16, 2022

Big picture

Dear Galvin Families,

Tomorrow, Monday, January 17, 2022, school will be closed in honor and celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As GMS recognizes and celebrates the life and work of Dr. King, on Thursday during X block students at GMS participated in an activity learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy. Students analyzed and discussed several quotations from Dr. King. Students were challenged to make meaning out of them and examine how they connect to their own lives. It is our hope that students gained an understanding from the lesson why we continue to recognize and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Thank you,

GMS Administration

Collaborative Chandelier

The photo attached is the finished chandelier created by Miss. Johansen's art students! The work was inspired by Dale Chihuly, a famous glassblowing artist. The students utilize empty water bottles and acrylic paint. Working cooperatively, with each student painting and cutting a single bottle, the final product was a beautiful work of art!

We previously shared with families an electronic copy of the GMS Student and Family Handbook with the District Appendix. This Handbook is also posted on our school website. The link to this handbook can be found here: Approved GMS Handbook with Appendix.

It is the responsibility of each family to review the Handbook together and to fill out the 2021-22 Canton Public Schools Student/Family Handbook and Permissions Signature Page. The link to the Google Form can be found here. Please ☑ each section and electronically sign this form as receipt and agreement as stated below. We ask that you complete this form for each child you have at the Galvin.

We appreciate your attention to this matter.

Mesozoic Relief Sculpture Scenes

Mrs. Robinson's 7th graders have been learning traditional clay hand-building skills through the process of relief sculpture for their Mesozoic Era unit. From brainstorming ideas to their final product, 7th graders investigated the Prehistoric geological time period of the Mesozoic Era. Students generated their imagery through their research of Mesozoic terrestrial and aquatic life forms. Students integrated their technological skills through Google Classroom slideshows, documenting their artwork throughout the process, and sharing them / posting them digitally. Seventh graders also enjoyed the opportunity to review their knowledge of color theory by generating color charts before adding color to their final product.

Chromebooks: Important Reminder

It is our students' responsibility to bring their charged Chromebook to school with them each day. We have a very limited number of loaners available and are using those to first support students who's Chromebooks aren't working. The Chromebook is an essential, daily, school supply. Please help your child come up with a process that allows them to have their device ready for school each day. Thank you.

Substitute Teachers

Do you have a college-age child home for winter break? If so, would they be interested in subbing for the Canton Public Schools while they are here? Subbing is a great way to keep busy, make money and get real-world work experience. In Canton, we have had great success bringing our own, former students back to help support our students and schools during this busy time year. If your child is interested, please have them fill out this sub application packet and email it to Kim Eardley ( to get the process started. If they fill it out before they get home, the process can begin asap!

Students in their first year of college are able to sub at the elementary and preschool levels only.

Students in their second year or beyond can sub at all school levels.

Self Portrait Clay Relief Sculptures

Mrs. Robinson's 8th graders have been generating both clay relief sculptures and self portraits within their Mythological Self Portrait unit. Eighth graders reviewed their portrait drawing skills and learned traditional clay hand-building to create their Mythological Self Portraits. The idea behind this concept was for 8th graders to identify themselves with a mythological god, goddess or beast. They researched Greek, Roman, South African, Chinese, Egyptian and Southeast Asian mythology (to name a few) for their ideas. Students integrated their technological skills for research, Google Classroom slideshows for background and process, and posting their work for feedback. Eighth graders enjoyed reviewing their knowledge and practice of color theory, through generating color charts, before adding color to their relief sculpture.

Lunch Aide

GMS is looking for a lunch aide to help supervise lunches each school day from 11:15 am to 1:00 pm. If you are interested in joining the Galvin team, please email Mr. Spillane,

Girls Who Code Club

Interested in learning to code, changing the world and making friends along the way? While Girls Who Code club is aimed to support young women, all genders are welcome! Girls Who Code is an international non-profit organization aimed to close the gender gap in technology careers. From 2015 to today the number of female coders has been steadily decreasing. Girls Who Code Clubs are aimed for girls to learn computer coding skills, learn about females in the industry and work collaboratively on a coding project to impact our local community in a positive and meaningful way through code. Students will learn to build animations, games, and apps as they work through Scratch, Python, Swift, HTML, CSS and JavaScript through online tutorials and more while connecting with technology companies in our community.

This club is a bit longer than our normal GMS clubs and is offered free for all. The club will meet for approximately 10-12 weeks beginning Wednesday, January 19th. Meetings will be Wednesdays 2:15 to 3:20 pm and a late bus is available.

Book Club

The ELA and Social Studies Departments very recently received information about a great opportunity for us to connect with the award-winning author, Jacqueline Woodson, on February 2, 2022, just as Black History Month is beginning. To prepare for this event, we are inviting students from the seventh and eighth grades to participate in a VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB, where we will discuss the book, Brown Girl Dreaming. Follow this LINK to join and encourage your seventh or eighth grader to join our Book Club. Copies of the novel will be provided to students who register. This promises to be an engaging and memorable event! Please email Lisa Kaminski with any questions,
