Return to School Family Survey

Earlier today all District 123 families received an email which included the opportunity to lend your voice to the start of our school year. Please make sure to complete the survey as our learning community's feedback will help District 123 continuously improve upon the student, family, and staff experience.

OLHMS Honors & Remembers

Fresh Times

The Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School Forestry & Gardening Club is off to a great start! Look at all those fresh veggies going to local food pantries. Students recently spent some time at the Oak Lawn Community Garden. The club learned about growing veggies, picked over 135 pounds of produce for food pantries, and planted lettuce and radishes for a fall harvest!

Centers are so much fun!

Students in Sward School Kindergarten classrooms are fortunate to have many great "centers" to engage with throughout their day. Learning centers are individualized activities that allow children to manipulate materials, explore ideas, discover consequences, build, create all while having fun. So the next time your child comes home and tells you about centers, make sure to ask them more!

Harnessing the "Power" of our Natural Resources

4th grade scientists in Miss Pedraza’s Kolmar classroom recently assembled their own solar powered fans. Students are beginning to study energy conversion through their hands-on science unit. In the Hands-on unit students take on the role of systems engineers for Ergstown, a fictional town that experiences frequent blackouts, and explore reasons why electrical systems may fail. Students obtain information from science books and models to learn about types of energy, energy sources, energy transfer, and energy conversion. Students then define engineering problems related to the town’s electrical system and work towards the design of wind turbines using what they have learned about energy and matter.

Minds-On!

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities provide hands-on and minds-on active learning opportunities for each student. Second grade students are using a variety of materials to build and create different structures in their library space.

Learning in Motion at Hannum School

3rd and 4th graders at Hannum school put learning in motion while enjoying different stations in Physical Education with Mr. Lazzarotto and Mr. Fanjoy. Quality Physical Education programs not only give students the opportunity to get some exercise, but also helps students begin to understand the importance of developing habits to maintain a lifetime of staying physically active.

Staff Chat!

The first “Staff Chat!” was recently released at Covington School. Covington teacher Ms. Ranieri was interviewed by one of her students and aspiring 2nd grade journalist. Check out the video below to learn more about Ms. Ranieri!
