Coppin Dragon families
We are excited for the upcoming Family Bingo Night on 9/27. Our PTC is in need of family themed raffle basket items for each classroom.
Here's how one can help:
- A parent volunteer is needed for each class to compile and build a family themed raffle basket. Ensure a detailed list is attached to basket with an estimated amount the basket items are worth.
- Parents need to send donation items to class by 9/20 so the room parent can turn in completed baskets to PTC by 9/23.
- 9/23 baskets to be turned into the office with attention to Lindsey Graves.
All donations are tax deductible and feel free to contact Lindsey Graves for any questions at LindseyDGraves@gmail.com.

Music News
We are glad to be back making music with our wonderful Carlin C. Coppin students. Our patriotic song of the month is This Land is Your Land, by Woodie Guthie, and our composer of the month is Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Continue reading for more specifics about each grade level.
CHOIR is for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders and started on Monday, September 9th. We still have a few open spaces, so if you have a singer for a student, please encourage them to join us from 1:50-2:50 each Monday in the music room. We have many performances and activities this year. A permission slip (click here) is required to join, and students must commit to be an enthusiastic member all year. For more information go to:

If you have any questions contact Mrs. Guemmer at jguemmer@wpusd.org.
BAND is for 4th and 5th grade and starts this Thursday at First Street School in Room 1 from 3:15-4:30pm, parents and students are welcome. Band rehearsals will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For more information, please contact Mr. Medina at amedina@wpusd.org.
1st Grade: Our youngest grades are starting out the year learning many songs, including the Hello Song, Tisket a Tasket, Hickety Tickety, Oats Peas Beans, Rig a Jig Jig, and Looby Loo . They will continue to learn classroom procedures, as well as concepts such as keeping the beat, dynamics (loud/soft), and basic rhythms.
2nd Grade: The second graders will be reviewing songs and procedures from 1st grade. They are also learning some new songs and games, such as Se Se Se and Kye Kye Kule. We will be reviewing concepts like keeping the beat and working more with basic rhythms.
3rd Grade: The third graders are reviewing many of their old songs and games from the last couple of years. They are also learning some new ones, such as Puncinella, Rocky Mountain, Beat Detective, and Uncle Joe. They are preparing to learn more advanced rhythm and pitch skills.
4th Grade: Our fourth graders are also reviewing old songs, games and procedures. They have been playing Beat Detective and singing rounds, such as Are You Sleeping. Soon we will begin a unit called “Mallet Madness,” in which they will be learning to play more advanced percussion instruments.
5th Grade: In addition to reviewing and learning a few new songs and games (Beat Detective), the fifth graders are starting a ukulele unit in September! Our wonderful volunteers from Ukes for Schools will be coming into our classes to help tune the ukuleles and assist with instruction. The ukulele is a versatile and relatively easy string instrument to learn, and our district has adopted it as a part of our music curriculum. The 5th graders are invited to play a few songs in a sing-a-long portion of our Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 3rd at 6:00 PM! Please contact Mrs. Guemmer if you have any questions about our study of the ukulele!

Parking & Drop Off
Please note that parking is at a premium, particularly now that we have so many new families who joined us this fall. If you are arriving early and waiting with your child in your car, please consider parking along the street to ensure our staff can find parking when they arrive.
Entering Campus
If you are walking your child onto campus and plan to go past the big, black gate, you must sign in at the front office and obtain a visitor badge to be on campus. Remember to sign out when you leave as well. This helps us to account for everyone that is on campus.
Food Service News
We've gotten lots of feedback from students and families regarding some changes in food services. Here is some info from our Food Service Director Christina Lawson:
A. WPUSD has started offering chocolate milk on Fridays only. Our Food Service department is really focused on bringing in lots of fruits and vegetables this year and reducing down the occurrence of items with added sugar.
B. Want to help shape the future of WPUSD food service offerings? We are looking for teachers, parents, community members that are interested in being on some panels/focus groups regarding food service selections and branding over the next year. Please reach out to Christina Lawson at clawson@wpusd.org if interested.
C. We are lucky to be able to feature lots of CA grown produce that is seasonal and fresh. All our offerings are all CA Grown at the moment including our carrots, lettuce, plums, peaches, oranges, zucchini, strawberries to name a few!
