TerraNichol Academy of the Arts
Asher Kindergarten Weekly School Blog Jan. 21-25th, 2019
Our journey and wonder in learning labs this week.
Miss Terra and Peter Reynolds brought the art studio alive with two art appreciation projects inspired by The Dot and The Ish! Each student created their own idea of where the dot would lead their creation. Discussing ishly feelings inspired students to take an adventure in lines. Ishly colors, ishly shapes, and ishly thinking allowed ideas to flow freely!
Snowflakes and snowmen make every child smile. We are evolving in our watercolor techniques making watercolor snowflakes with oil pastel details. Designing snowmen with playdough and construction paper is building our seriation skills of small, medium and large.
It seems that each year shortly after returning from break students find their curiosity for math. They become math hungry and next thing we know we have little mathematicians in our learning labs questioning measurement, amount, counting everything and making comparisons. We are using this new found curiosity to organically build math skills. Students have been working on counting, recognizing numbers on the number train, using playdough to shape numbers, write numbers, counting how tall our towels are, engaging in 2D and 3d shape investigation through manipulation and sketching.
Next week we will:

Who is Wassily Kandinsky
- Wassily Kandinsky everything starts with a dot.
- What do we know about Wassily Kandinsky? • He was born in Moscow, Russia on December 16, 1866. He grew up in the Russian city of Odessa where he enjoyed music and learned to play the piano and the cello.
- When he was little he played the piano and the cello
- BECOMING AN ARTIST • Kandinsky went to college and then became a law teacher. However, when he was thirty he decided to change careers and become an artist.
- Abstract Expressionism • Kandinsky was one of the founding fathers of Abstract Art. • Shapes and colors alone could be art.
- Abstract Expressionism • The Abstract Art movement is called Abstract Expressionism because, although the art has no subject.
- No subject
- Colors and Shapes • Kandinsky felt that he could express feelings and music through colors and shapes in his paintings.
- MUSIC AND COLOURS • For example, he thought that yellow had the crisp sound of a brass trumpet and that certain colors placed together could harmonize like chords on a piano.
- Can we try like Kandinsky to guess the sounds of the colors? • What color the piano sounds? • What color the violin sounds? • What color the drum sounds?
- The shapes he was most interested in were the circle, triangle, and the square. • He thought the triangle would cause aggressive feelings, the square calm feelings, and the circle spiritual feelings.
- Wassily Kandinsky's pictures
- Let’s paint like Kandinsky • Let’s draw circles of different sizes on a piece of paper. • Color them as you like. • Cut them and paste the smallest circle over the largest.
- Let’s create our Wassily Kandinsky picture • 1.- Colour with waxes the paper as you see in the example. • 2.- Draw in another piece of paper circles of different shapes and color them. • 3.- When you finish paste the circles on the paper as you like.
- Let’s make Kandinsky’s tree
- Experimenting • Let’s draw our abstract picture. • In a piece of paper draw circles starting from smallest (the dot) to largest, color them • Use your imagination.

Friendship Letters
We ask families to refrain from bringing in Valentine's cards and treats to school. We choose to embrace the Reggio Emilia curriculum offering students a meaningful learning experience in writing the friendship letters. Plus now its one less thing off your plate as a parent! Thank you for your cooperation. A note was also posted in the Sandbox portal this week.

Planning Ahead
2019 Enrollment
Enrollment for 2019-2020 School Year
Based on many inquiries to the school about new enrollment and new families already securing their space in the program for 2019-2020 school year we will be sending out re-enrollment for our existing students and siblings early in February. Typically we do this in March but because of the volume of interest for next year, we will need to evaluate space in the program for new incoming students. Be on the watch for information coming out to all families in February 2019. This will include our Kindergarten and First Grade program.
Re-enrollment forms and Registration Fee submitted by the deadline will guarantee the student's space for the upcoming school year. If forms and registration fee is not submitted by the deadline we will assume you are forfeiting your space.

$350 spent in the school eco-friendly store per school year.

Using essential oils is intuitively simple and highly satisfying. However, the many oils available with their numberless combinations and wellness applications can be a bit overwhelming to beginners. As a simple first step on your journey with essential oils, we recommend a trio of lavender, lemon, and peppermint, three of our most popular oils. They will provide you and your family a compelling experience with the life-enhancing properties of therapeutic-grade essential oils. This kit includes 15mL bottles of the following oils:
