What is Intellectual Rights?

It is a right by a person or organisation to use its own ideas, plans or other intangible assets without causing any trouble. Some example of this rights are patents, copyrights, trade secret and trademark given by court lawsuit. The purpose of IP is to protect individual ideas so that it will disallow competitor to copy the idea.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAWS THAT ENGINEERING ORGANISATION SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN OPERATING IN A COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT

Copyright

Copyright will protect your idea or work to prevent other people from copying or stealing it.

For example FKI (fisher karpark industries) have made their own parking meter that is very unique, other companies can't copy it unless they ask FKI permission. However parking meter is invented by Carl Maage so it is important to contact the maker or any relevant authority that linked to the creator to prevent breaking the copyright law.

Trademark

If you register your trademark you will prevent other people to use your brand e.g. using your business name on their product in order to get more sales like counterfeiters.

For example FKI (fisher karpark industries) have their own trademark, this prevent other companies to use their FKI brand e.g. another parking meter companies will prosecuted when they use FKI brand.

Patent

If you have patent this will protect your invention and will give you the power to take legal action to anyone using, making or selling your product without your consent.

For example FKI (fisher karpark industries) they manufacture parking meters, so if anyone counterfeit their parking meters with their brand e.g. making and importing it, FKI can take legal action to the counterfeiters.

Design Registration

When you register your design, this will prevent other people to copy your design e,g, appearance, decoration, shape etc…

For example FKI (fisher karpark industries) they manufacture parking meters, so other people are not allowed to copy FKI design, appearance, shape etc... without FKI consent otherwise FKI can take legal action to them.
