Smiler News
January 2
Message from Mr. French
Smiler Families,
Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful and restful Winter Break.
As we gear up for the start of school again, we have many events in the month of January. Students will also be involved in middle of the year testing. This data helps us to understand student progress and inform our work for the remainder of the year. Information about the testing can be found below. As always, this is just one indicator of student growth. No test can measure all the unique ways that our children grow and learn. At home, continue to read with your child and help them discuss new learning.
It is also the end of the quarter on January 24th. For our upper grade students, parents should check in on PowerSchool to determine student progress and support as needed.
We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and continue the great learning happening at Pineville.

School Information
K-2 Testing
Students in kindergarten through second grade will have a number of tests in January and February.
- DIBELS Testing: This is one on one testing given to every K-2 student. It helps to determine student progress on learning to read. Students are pulled by a teacher or academic support staff member to take a series of tests including practicing blending, reading fluently and identifying letters.
- MAP Testing: K-2 students will take the math MAP test. This is a computer based test that adapts to student knowledge to determine what they are ready to learn. As the student answers questions correctly, they will experience more difficult questions.
3-5 Testing
- 3rd Grade students will receive DIBELS testing, MAP Math Testing and Benchmark assessments.
- 4th and 5th Grade students will receive MAP (Reading and Math) Testing and Benchmark assessments.
- DIBELS: This is one on one testing given to every 3rd Grade student. It helps to determine student progress on learning to read. Students are pulled by a teacher or academic support staff member to take a series of tests including practicing blending, reading fluently and identifying letters.
- MAP: This is a computer based test that adapts to student knowledge to determine what they are ready to learn. As the student answers questions correctly, they will experience more difficult questions.
- Benchmark: These assessments are closely aligned to the EOG Test at the end of the year.
Treasure Box Donations
As part of our school wide positive behavior matrix, we have a bi-weekly treasure box cart that goes around to all K-5 classrooms. Any student who has earned fifty smiler tickets can pick an item from the treasure box. Currently our treasure box is runny VERY low on supplies.
We have created an Amazon Wish List with treasure box items. We are reaching out to our community to help us replenish our treasure box. If you can purchase any items from the wish list, our Smilers would really appreciate it! All items purchased through the Amazon Wish List will be sent directly to the school.
