Updates from Mrs. Froning
January 16, 2021
Reminder: 3:00 pm Dismissal EVERY Friday
Important Information:
Dear Families,
Recently it was determined that first responders, educators, and people over 65 would be provided the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and a sign up link was opened. As you can imagine, many people throughout Michigan logged in and scheduled a vaccine appointment as soon as possible in an effort to continue to combat the COVID-19 virus.
While this opportunity is welcomed by many staff, the process was not without its faults and some staff will be traveling longer distances to receive their vaccine while others were only able to get a vaccine during the school day. This may have been the case for the first, second, or both doses of the vaccine.
As a district, we want to ensure that everyone is able to do their part to stop this virus, should they choose to receive the vaccine. This means that we needed to find a way to support staff that were only able to get an appointment during the school day while continuing to manage the difficulties that we have had filling sub positions for in person classrooms. To achieve this goal, district level administration determined that we will provide an asynchronous instruction day (i.e. learning at home through Google Classroom) if a teacher needs to be absent to receive the vaccine. This means that individual classrooms may receive communication from their teacher that indicates that they will learn from home through the Google Classroom one or two days, depending on the appointments that the teacher was able to get.
We know that this change will present a challenge for families, especially our students that are normally in person and will be home for the day. We have asked that your teacher provide advanced notice to families of their absence should their scheduled vaccine appointment fall during school hours.
What does this mean for your learner IF your child's teacher needs to be absent for the vaccine?
- My Path students should not see any disruption to their instruction.
- Our Path students will experience a shift from the Zoom classroom to the Google Classroom for their instruction. Teachers will also prepare students the day before their absence when in the Zoom classroom.
- In Person students will learn from home (i.e., not report to school for the day), receiving their instruction through Google Classroom. Teachers will also prepare students the day before their absence when the students are at school. Advance notice will be provided so families can plan accordingly.
Please reach out to me, should you have any questions about this decision from our District. I know this adds another layer of challenge for some families, but it also provides some hope that the end of this pandemic is near as we continue to work together to combat COVID-19.
Stay safe and be well,
Kristin Froning

IMPORTANT Update regarding COVID 19 Procedures
- What do schools do when covid-19 symptoms occur at school?
- Should I report to school? (for students and staff)
Our staff will use the Daily Screener when a student reports they are not feeling well at school. If a student presents with a symptom as described in #1 and/or two symptoms as described in #2, the student will be sent home and may return to school with either a negative COVID result or after isolating for 10 days. If the student reports only one of these symptoms described in #2, they will be sent home and parents/caregivers should consult your medical provider. The student may return to work/school after being fever free for 24 hours without taking fever reducing medication and symptoms have improved.
Also, per the flowchart “Should I report to school?” if a member of your household has been tested for COVID, all Walled Lake Schools students in your household may not attend school until a negative test results has been obtained.
We continue to consult with the team of nurses assigned to Walled Lake Schools to ensure we are making decisions that are based on the latest medical information to make certain we are doing everything possible to stop the spread.
Quarantine Timing: Based on the recommendation of the CDC and Oakland County Health Dept., we are adjusting the quarantine time for people who have been exposed (close contact) to COVID-19 to 10 days, provided they do not exhibit any symptoms during the first 10 days after exposure. It was formerly 14 days.
Congratulations to Estella Hudnut and Henry Maurer!
