Making a difference, one person at a time
Groundhog Day? (Feb. 1st - Feb. 8th)
For example, one of my biggest pet peeves is the definition of insanity or doing the same thing over and over and expecting something different. Sometimes school can feel like this. Each day the same issues seem to pop up.
The reason this is a pet peeve is because to my core I want to solve problems not just apply a bandaid.
All that being said, how do we get out of the rut of Groundhog Day? Here are a few things to consider:
1. Do you already have the "usual" suspects?
- Ask yourself, is there a positive relationship?
- Has the challenge been communicated to parents/stakeholders?
- Have you tracked the data? Is there a trigger or pattern?
- Is making a change something we (school) can control?
2. Think deeper...is your classroom about Learning or Doing School?
- Seriously...day in and day out if the primary purpose is "doing school" you should likely expect pushback from students that just simply struggle to fit the mold of school.
- Ask yourself this...Are your students looking for answers or starting with questions?
3. As adults we need to...
- Teach Clear Expectations...not just tell.
- Help build self-confidence in others.
- Have high expectations and be consistent.
- Be willing to learn from others. Often times the best resources are the people we lean on the least (our colleagues).
Don't let Groundhog Day become your classroom. If you feel it's the case, think of ways to create change. If you're looking for additional resources here are a few that can help.
