What is a dialect?
A dialect is a regional variation of a language distinguished by distinctive vocabulary spelling and pronunciation. Usually a speaker of one dialect can understand someone of a different dialect. English has an extremely high number of dialects.

Major differences in US dialects originated because of differences in dialects among the original settlers. They are grouped in 3 areas, northern, southern and midlands
