5th Grade Social Studies

GIANTS - Geographic Inquiry and New Temporal Sequencing

Why?

Recent analysis of research on the brain over the last 10 to 15 years has revealed numerous applications to the classroom. In fact, it has lead to a new field titled, "Educational Neuroscience".

This professional learning opportunity is designed to help 5th Grade Educators understand how they can apply this research to improve their instructional practices using newly designed curriculum and resources.

What Is It?

Designed and facilitated by West Michigan teachers and social studies consultants under the guidance of Dr. Phil Gersmehl, this 7-part series examines the connections between spatial (geographic) and temporal (historical) thinking. Within the context of the revised 5th grade GLCEs, (U.S. history from the 15th century to approximately 1795), comprehensive curricular units, that include research-based instructional strategies for teaching spatial thinking through the Arc of Inquiry, hands-on activities, literacy strategies, and best practices in both formative and summative assessment will be modeled at each session.

As a result of the incorporation of disciplinary specific, critical thinking skills brought about by the design of The C3 Framework, this curriculum and accompanying professional development network are the best tools to assist 5th grade social studies teachers in developing inquiry-based instructional units.
