Month of the Military Child Cards
We will have some specific cards that will be created for you " PARENTS" to write a special message to your child(ren) regarding being a military child. If your child is with us and you are not military related, don't hesitate write about how they support all our new students as they adjust to our building, being a leader and friend and helping others adjust to new school, routines, etc. Even if you are not specifically military affiliated, your child is friends with a Military Child here at Whiteman-which is truly appreciated! Please write them a personal message to celebrate the Month of the Military Child too.
On Friday, April 12 if you attend the Bingo, you will have an opportunity to fill the card out then. Please visit the table in the lounge and sign a card for your child(ren) that attends WE. We will hand out the cards on the official Purple Up Day on April 18th to all our students. If you aren't able to make it on Friday, April 12th, don't worry we will send the cards home to you and just ask that you write a note to your child(ren) and send it back to school by April 16th. PTO purchased purple gifts that we would like to hand out on the 18th to celebrate Purple Up Day!

MAP Testing 3rd and 4th Grade
Dear 3rd and 4th Grade Families:
During the time period of April 29-May 10th, your child will take a test called MAP in Reading and Math . Your child does not need to study to prepare for the MAP test. This test is being used to assess what your child already knows. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast the day of the test. The district will provide free breakfast during the testing dates for your child.
What is the MAP Test?
MAP stands for Missouri Assessment Program. It is a series of assessments for English language arts, mathematics and science at grades 3-8; and English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies in high school. These assessments are designed to check student learning to find out if Missouri students are reaching the Show-Me Standards.
The Grade-Level assessments are made up of multiple-choice and machine-scored items, as well as "constructed response" items. Constructed response items require students to supply (rather than select) an appropriate response.
Grade Level:
- Grade 3: English Language Arts, Mathematics
- Grade 4: English Language Arts, Mathematics
- Grade 5: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science
- Grade 6: English Language Arts, Mathematics
- Grade 7: English Language Arts, Mathematics
- Grade 8: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science
High School (End-of-Course tests):
- English I, English II
- Algebra I, Algebra II*, Geometry
- U.S. History, U.S. Government
- Biology
- Personal Finance
How can I help my child perform well on the MAP assessment?
Tip #1: Read, Read, Read!
Reading takes skill and practice. One of the best and simplest steps to improve children's reading ability is to provide sustained periods of time for children to read.
Tip #2: Help your child read like a writer.
Even in the early grades, children can begin to "get into the head" of the author. Reading improves a child's writing, and writing improves a child's reading.
Tip #3: Read a variety of books and magazines.
MAP English language arts tests contain short stories, poems, dialogue, magazine articles, charts and tables. Children need to be able to read a wide variety of texts ranging from road signs to restaurant menus, comic books to classics, and from tennis shoe ads to computer manuals.
Tip #4: Build your child's reading stamina.
To build reading stamina, you may wish to encourage your child to increase gradually the amount of time she reads at one sitting. Include short breaks, such as stretching or closing her eyes for a minute. Set individual reading goals based upon doing her best.
Tip #5: Teach your child that visuals are part of the text.
Students are often required to gather information from photos, captions, drawings, charts, and graphs. You can help by teaching your child to look at all of these materials as part of the total text.
Tip #6: Help your child know how to use text-based support in written responses.
Most of the constructed-response items on the MAP assessments have two parts or require children to explain or show how they arrived at their answers. Children will receive only partial credit for answers to questions that are not supported with specific details or that do not contain an explanation.
Tip #7: Help your child to identify all parts of a question.
Teach your child to identify exactly what each question is asking. Some questions have multiple parts, which are often combined into a single sentence with a single question mark at the end. The child should underline each question word (who, what, when, where, why, how and any other word or phrase that indicates a question). By doing so, she can see if a question has multiple parts. Not answering all parts of a multi-part question is a common error.
Tip #8: Teach your child to paraphrase test items, turning questions into statements.
Teach your child to turn questions into statements. The child may underline the question words as described above, and then turn each part of the item into a statement. For example, the question, "Why did the main character play with the ball?" could be rephrased as "The main character played with the ball because ..." This practice allows the child to phrase the question in a way that makes the most sense to him. He is then ready to read the passage and look for answers.
Tip #9: What can a parent or guardian do to help on test day?
- Be aware of the testing schedule. ( April 29-May 10)
- Be certain that your child has had adequate rest (this may mean getting them used to an earlier bed time before the week of testing).
- Be on time for school.
- Avoid scheduling appointments that can be made at a later date.
- Dress your child in layered clothing. This way, the child may add clothing to get warmer or remove some clothing to be cooler.
- If your school allows it, make sure your child has a book to read when the testing session is complete.
- Be certain that your child has two or more number two pencils (not mechanical).
- Have a positive attitude about testing.

Kids Heart Challenge
Hi Whiteman AFB Elementary Families!
We have begun Kids Heart Challenge (formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart)!
Your Child is learning heart healthy exercises and lessons on how to achieve a heart healthy lifestyle. They also have the chance to feel great about helping kids with special hearts and learn about doing good deeds!
Please Register your Child and take one of the Heart Health Challenges with your Family - Click here Join us for Kids Heart Challenge at Whiteman AFB Elementary then click on Sign Up. This will start a habit in your family for a healthier lifestyle. When You and your Child register and choose a Family Heart Health Challenge your Child receives a glow in the dark wristband (no donation necessary).
This year during Kids Heart Challenge we are also recognizing positive behavior. When the Echo Club leader sees a student is doing a good deed or act of kindness at school that student will receive an Echo Club Certificate and Echo Club character.
If you help your child raise donations, they receive thank you gifts. For example, if your child raises $10 online, they receive Echo, Finn, the backpack clasp plus the Heart Hero Wristband (mentioned above). For an extra special family reward this year – if your child raises $250 - your family is invited to attend a Movie Night on KC Chiefs Arrowhead field and participate in the fun activities for the evening.
The Wristband, Ruby Sticker, Finn Water Tattoo and all of the Heart Heroes COME TO LIFE! Watch this video with your Child to see how they come to life and so you can meet the Heart Heroes - learn their lessons and see why we are doing Kids Heart Challenge! Click here: Welcome to Heartsville – Meet the Heart Heroes
In addition to online, you can also raise donations with your Child through PayPal, by check (you can scan your checks with the app), cash or through a Matching Gift Program through your Employer –www.matchinggifts.com/aha.
Thank you for taking the Family Heart Health Challenge and helping others! Every single dollar you raise will help kids and families build healthier lives. I'm so proud of our school community for making such a big difference!
Thank you for being a Whiteman AFB Elementary Heart Hero!
