MATH LESSON 1
BE SURE TO READ THE REST OF THE SMORE CAREFULLY TO FIND THE ANSWER TO THE RIDDLE! GOOD LUCK MATHEMATICIANS!
UNIT 8 KEY MATH VOCABULARY
GOAL:MATHEMATICIANS WILL APPLY THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE CUSTOMARY (STANDARD) & METRIC SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT IN REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS
First...LAUNCH:
- First, watch the introductory video below that will launch us into learning more about the Metric & Customary (Standard) Measurement Systems
- Once you have completed viewing the video, take some time to record your responses on a sheet of paper or whiteboard for the 2 "What Makes Sense" Tasks below. There is 1 Task for the Metric System and 1 Task for the Customary (Standard) System of Measurement. Keep your responses in a safe place and continue to carefully read the Smore to find the answers!
- Good Luck Mathematicians! You've got this! **This does not need to be submitted to your classroom teacher.**
WHAT MAKES SENSE: TASK 1 CUSTOMARY
IT'S TIME TO MEASURE!
WHAT MAKES SENSE: TASK 2 METRIC
Next...EXPLORE:
- After you have watched the instructional video and have completed your "What Makes Sense" Tasks you are ready to go on a MATH HUNT!
- You will complete your MATH Measurement HUNT around your home/neighborhood finding items that represent the measurements listed on your task.
- You will record the items you found for each category on your Student Task and submit it to your classroom teacher following the directions they provide to you. Have Fun Hunting!
EXAMPLE: If I was asked to find an object around my house/neighborhood that was about 7 inches long- I might record a FORK on my student task.
**The answer to our Math Riddle is... TEMPERATURE!! (Is that what you were thinking?)**
Last...LANDING:
- Mathematicians it is time to reflect on your learning about measurement acquired from the video and student tasks and apply your best efforts as you complete your 3,2,1 Exit Ticket.
- Submit your 3,2,1 Exit Ticket to your classroom teacher following the directions they provide to you.
HOW DID YOU MEASURE UP?
JUST FOR FUN! GRAB A FAMILY MEMBER AND A DECK OF CARDS TO PLAY! ENJOY!
MATH LESSON 2
MATH ACTIVATOR: WOULD YOU RATHER...
RECORD YOUR RESPONSE ON A SHEET OF PAPER OR WHITEBOARD AND SHARE IT WITH ANOTHER MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY- DO THEY AGREE? WHY OR WHY NOT?
GOAL: MATHEMATICIANS WILL SOLVE PROBLEMS USING CONVERSIONS WITHIN A GIVEN MEASUREMENT SYSTEM
First...LAUNCH:
- First, look over the anchor charts provided below that will help you as a mathematician to make sense of problems asking you to convert measurements. **REFER BACK TO THESE CHARTS OFTEN FOR SUPPORT!**
- Next, watch the 2 instructional videos and be sure to have a piece of paper/pencil or whiteboard/marker handy so that you can take notes, work out problems along with the video, and pull out "Key Ideas" that will help you on your Student Tasks.
- REMEMBER... you are able to stop the videos and re-watch the videos as many times as needed.
ANCHOR CHARTS FOR CONVERSIONS
CONVERTING BETWEEN CUSTOMARY UNITS OF MEASURE
CONVERTING BETWEEN METRIC UNITS OF MEASURE
Next...EXPLORE:
- Once you have carefully watched the instructional videos and reviewed all the anchor charts you will complete the Student Tasks you see below and that were provided to you by your classroom teacher.
- After you have applied your best efforts in completing your Student Tasks and have thoroughly checked your work, you will submit the tasks to your classroom teacher by following the directions they have provided.
