ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL
GRIT: Volume 14
Dear Roberts,
Our attention is our most precious asset. Our ability to put our attention where we want, when we want, for how long we want is a key attribute to flourishing. In a world that is always fighting for our attention, what or who do you allow to have it?
"At an Apple event in January 2010, Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad. For ninety minutes, Jobs explained why the iPad was the best way to look at photos, listen to music, take classes on iTunes U, browse Facebook, play games, and navigate thousands of apps. He believed everyone should own an iPad." The ironic part of this story is that Steve Jobs wouldn’t even let his own kids use the iPad he created.
Roberts, we are constantly inundated with a plethora of attention grabbing marketing to addict us to their focus. In Steve Job's case, think of it this way, the drug dealer never gets high on his own supply. We are a product of what gets our attention and focus! Why give it away so easy?
Is our attention on what matters? You see Roberts, our focus is on all means ALL.
We focus on all students here at Roberts regardless of where they come from and where they are in their educational journey. We also are hyper focused on each and every one of you. This school is focused on building on your strength and will never limit your growth opportunities. Let your attention be on building character and be guarded of those greedy and addictive vampires that are constantly seeking it.

Roberts Pantry-Christmas Edition
A Promise
Can you believe it has almost been 3 months since Harvey hit Houston? What amazes us is the Texas Strong attitude so many people and our children have shown. The outpouring of generosity from other schools, friends, neighbors, RMS Staff and even complete strangers is Extraordinary. Roberts has been able to help our families with Walmart gift cards, food (we started the backpack buddy program) clothing/shoes, school supplies, we’ve handed out coats and jackets, hygiene products and added a brand new Washer and Dryer to help with laundry. We will continue to do all we can to help with the relief of our Roberts Families! We’ve made that promise!
Truth
Last week I was greeted by one of our newer 5th grade students who came running to the front office. When I asked why she was out of breath she replied, “Are you the lady that passes out food?” My reply was, “Yes, Ms. Pitre and I pass out backpacks of food.” In a voice of almost desperation she said, “I need you to add me to that list, MY FAMILY NEEDS THAT FOOD.” Without hesitation she was added to the list and was sent with a bag and left with a huge smile.
For many of our students they’re advocates for their loved ones. They’re old enough to know what their families need and what they are lacking. This Christmas many of our displaced and homeless students will not be writing down Christmas lists, as they know the basic essentials are still needed for their families.
RMS Goal
With 90 RMS students still homeless we know we can’t change their situations but we’d like to add a little cheer for each of them on Christmas morning.
This month our goal is to send each of our 90 students with a Christmas gift to open. Right now we only have a few.
We Need Your Help
We need your help! If you, your class or anyone you know is interested in purchasing a gift for one of our boys or girls please sign up in the workroom.
Thanks for all you do and especially the love you share daily with our RMS children.
Love~ Emily & Deronda
