The Storm Forecast
January 5, 2023
Dear parents, guardians, and students,
Welcome back!
We are so happy to welcome back our students and welcome the new students joining the Cecil family.
This semester will prove to be an exciting one as we continue to create school history- we will move into our new building, increase dual enrollment, inaugurate traditions like Prom, Grad Bash and the pinnacle of our year, our inagural graduation.
This semester will also bring our first round of state testing for students. Our staff is diligently working to ensure that our students are well prepared to succeed on these assessments.
I am so grateful to lead this amazing group of students. Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us. I wish all of you a happy new year.

New building updates
Dear San Jose Cecil parents,
October has come and gone and with it more questions have arisen about the move into our new home so I want to take this opportunity to share with you the latest information regarding the move to our new campus.
As most of you are aware, the supply chain shortages created by the COVID-19 pandemic affected the construction industry nationwide. The greatest impact on our school’s construction was the pandemic backorders on HVAC units (air conditioners). Hurricanes Ian and Nicole closed the construction site for a few days, however, Southcrest Construction has continued steadily working on the remaining construction while awaiting the HVAC units.
As of today, we are looking at a projected opening date in February. I am in communication with San Jose Schools leadership and working on the transition plan for our move to the FSCJ Cecil location. I will keep all of you updated with dates, processes and when opening ceremonies will take place.
I want to thank you for your patience with this process- if you have any more questions, please feel free to reach out to our superintendent, Ryan Rewey at ryan.rewey@sanjoseschools.org and he will be happy to help answer any questions you may have.
I am looking forward to opening our new home to our students and your families.
Michelle Knapp
Upcoming assessments
9th and 10th graders will be taking Progress Monitoring 2 (PM2) assessment in Language Arts. This is the midyear assessment in preparation for the end of year state assessment and should indicate where students are at this point in time.
11th and 12th grade students that need to take the Algebra or Geometry EOC exams will also be testing next week.
All 11th and 12th graders will be taking the PERT exam to assess college readiness.
It is important that all students take their assessments seriously and do their best so that we, as a school team, can gather the best possible data on how to help them improve from here until the end of the school year.
Please make sure that students are at school on time as late commers cannot be admitted into the testing room.

Report cards
If you need a printed copy of a report card, please reach out to Mr. Cassells at christopher.cassells@sanjoseschools.org
These report cards will show both 2nd quarter and 1st semester grades. Some year long classes with EOC exams may not show a semester grade as this will calculate at the end of the year when the EOC exam scores are calculated.
This report card will also generate an updated GPA for students. As a reminder, students wishing to take dual enrollment courses next year must have an unweighted 3.0 GPA.
Attendance matters! Please make sure that your student is at school. This includes avoiding excessive school check outs.
Counseling/therapy available on campus
Jamie Williams is the new therapist with San Jose Cecil, and will be providing individual and group therapy on Fridays each week. She also provides family support and education and help link or provide additional resources for kids and their families. Some resources include food and clothing pantry, help with rental assistance, more intense mental health services such outpatient services or psychiatry, and link families to resources in the community.
If you would like your student to participate in therapy with Ms. Williams, intake packets are available in the front office. You can contact Ms. Williams, you can email her jwilliams@jfcs.org
Parent/Staff organization meeting!
Attached are the minutes from our last meeting.
We still need volunteers to lead the group. If you are interested, please email Mrs. Knapp
Attention Juniors and Seniors
They will be discussing academic checkpoints for juniors and seniors as well as all of the social events for the spring- Grad Bash, college visits, Prom, graduation and more!
Join us at 6pm on Thursday, January 12 in the cafeteria.
2nd semester schedules
While most students' schedules will remain intact, some will have changes due to:
- semester long courses
- dual enrollment
- courses needed for graduation
- changes in a teacher's teaching schedule
Teachers will remain the same, students may just have a different clas period. As a reminder, we do not do schedule changes because a student doesn't like the class/teacher, wants to switch periods, etc... The only schedule changes are those based on academic needs/requirements.
Students with online courses
- Students in year long courses should be at a minimum of 50% completion
- Students in semester courses must have completed the course
If you are not sure where your student's progress is at, please ask them to log into Edgenuity and show you their progress report.
All 9th graders in HOPE have Ms. Colon monitoring their progression. If you have questions, you can reach out to Ms. Colon.
Students with other online courses: look at your student's schedule. The teacher listed as their research teacher is the teacher monitoring their progress. You can refer questions to him/her.
As a reminder, students have access to their coursework 24/7 and can complete work at any time.
School policy reminders
Cell phones:
Students may not have cell phones out at any point during the day with the exception of breakfast and lunch. The use of cell phones during breakfast and lunch is a privilege and it can be revoked if abused. This includes ear buds.
Tardies:
Students get 3 "free" tardies each quarter. After the 3rd tardy, students will begin to receive disciplinary consequences. This is for both tardies to school and to class. Tardies will reset each quarter.
Uniform infractions:
Students must be in full uniform every day. Failure to be in full uniform will result in the student being sent to the office to get into appropriate uniform dress.
Reminder regarding deliveries
Any deliveries will be held in the office until 3:20.
No cell phone use during the day
Students using cell phones during instructional time will have cell phones confiscated for the remainder of the school day. Multiple infractions will result in discipline referrals.
Students may use their phones at breakfast until 8:20am and at lunch from 1:00-1:30.
Seniors- share your good news!
