The Little Rock Times
September 4 1957
Based on the Little Rock Girl by Shelley Tougas
Today nine African-American teens made history. The teens were simply trying to go to the all white Little Rock High school and were stoped from going to school by the Arkansaw Natioanal gaurd. The teens were trying to be the first black kids to ever go to a all white school. These nine brave kids were Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls, Minniejean Brown, Gloria Ray, Thelma Mothershed and Melba Pattillo. A angry Mob of about 200 rascists (or people who belive that they are the dominant race and hate other races.) Angry people were screaming and trying to block them from getting into the school. As the kids were sent back home they had a angry mob behind them chanting (or to recite something) horrible things and telling them that they should never come back. In the words of 15 year old Elizabeth Eckford "I was scared and was simply looking for someone who would make her feel safe. I then noticed a woman witha kind face, but the woman lunged forward and spit on me." People in this town are still increadibly prejudace (or a strong anger for someone who is different than you.) The Teens were defieing the Arkansaw governor by going to the school but they didnt care they knew that they were making a difference and changing history today. The federal court said that they had to let the kids go but Orval Faubus called the national gaurd (or a military establishment serving as a national constabulary and defense force) anyway. These kids went through alot of harrasment (or to annoy persistently) and pain just to get the same rights as white kids.I hope the school finally lets the the little rock nine go to a white school but for now all we can do is wait and watch.
