Elms School Saftey Updates

Elms School safety committee met last week and addressed a few building concerns. Below are items you need to know in an emergency situation:

  • Lock-Downs - If a class is out for recess and there exists an external threat, students will be brought into the building through the 6th grade external doors off of Mrs. Spodney's or Mrs. Walther's classrooms. The other options would be the music room or art room external doors. The committee decided that there is no distinct procedure in this type of scenario so it will be on you to get the students into either of these locations quickly and safely. If a class is out for recess and there is an internal threat you will quickly escort your students out into the wooded areas surrounding our playground, get down on the ground, remain quiet, and stay our of sight. If your class is attending library, you will take students into room 208 which is Mrs. Guevara's office. Mrs. G's office is now a safe room and always will be accessible. Remember safe rooms are the only rooms in the building that still have popsicle sticks in the door panel. You will simply pull the popsicle stick and follow lock-down procedures.
  • Fire Drills - For our very next fire drill Units A & B will exit their students out of the emergency exit window located in your classroom. We have not practiced this exiting measure and need to make sure students know what this looks like. For drill purposed you will need to pretend the fire is right outside of your classroom door.
  • Other Items - At the next District-Wide Safety committee meeting we will get more input on how to support subs during recess. It is an issue for subs not having a keyless entry code to get back into the building.

Mrs. Baxter has updated this information on your Lock-Down procedures sheet and provide you an updated copy to place on your clipboards.
