Appreciate Your Pastor

As many of you know, October is Pastor Appreciation Month. Hopefully you appreciate your pastors and ministry staff year-long. But having a month set aside is a nice reminder that, while the IRS might define them as employees, those who serve in pastoral ministry are servants to the Lord and His church, worthy of love, respect, and yes, appreciation.

In my work with congregations across the country, I have heard some weird ideas about pastors. From the member who flippantly says his pastor only works Sundays to those who expect him to have a hand in every ministry of the church, few in the church have a genuine understanding of their pastor and his ministry.

Pastors work hard. They are generally responsible for the overall ministry of the church, though in healthy situations this comes more as coach of a team than as the actual go to guy (1 Peter 5:2). Given the time spent preparing sermons and lessons in addition to their delivery, the preaching ministry is always a challenge. But the preaching takes on greater meaning when you understand that it occurs as part of his call to disciple and equip God’s people for service (Eph. 4:11-12). Add to that the expectation for personal support and prayer for the members, not to mention concern for their own family needs, I hope you see that ministry is a stressful occupation.

Yes, God sustains your pastors. He empowers their ministry. But often He does so through you.

Your pastors love the Lord! They love their families! And yes, they love you. So this October, take some time and communicate your love and appreciation for the ministry they provide. Share the same sentiment to your entire church staff. And do your part to see that your church as a body affirms those who serve you in Christ’s name. Whether you see it or not, God blesses you through them. Now is your opportunity to bless them.
