Principal Perspective - PYP News
This week we learned that the Beaverton School District will no longer support the International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Programme (PYP) at the elementary school level. For the past 10 years, we at Ridgewood have received additional staffing and funds for professional development in order to become and remain an authorized PYP school. Without those additional funds we cannot meet the standards of the program, and will therefore withdraw from the organization.
This is disappointing and heartbreaking news for us to hear, as each staff member at Ridgewood has committed to the tenets of the PYP, and spends countless hours implementing global thinking, action and inquiry into our school.
In the coming months we will begin the task of redefining what we want our school to be, and what our mission and vision are. Our current mission statement is focused on the PYP Learner Profile, and, as those are copyrighted, we will need to update many facets of our school curriculum and support systems.
If you are interested in joining our staff in this work of revisioning our school, please let me know. As I finalize the details of what needs to be done and the timeline for completion, I will seek input from our staff, students and families.
I have said in the past the PYP is the root of who we are as school, and the basis for how we teach. While this will no longer be true, we will depend on the strong teaching staff we have, along with the amazing parent support we receive, to create a school that supports all learners as they prepare for an ever-changing world.
Distance Learning for All!
It is important that children log into Seesaw each school-day morning to see what activities have been posted for the day. It is also vital that students develop routines and schedules at home to support this learning. If you need help in this area, please reach out to your child's teacher or our Counselor, Ms. Callie, and they will be happy to help you set up a home learning environment that works for your family.
Teachers are tracking student participation, and will be reporting that to you at the end of the year. We are doing this so that we know what learning targets each child will need upon our return to school. We understand that this work can be overwhelming to families, and are ready to support you as needed. Please prioritize the health and wellness of your family, and know that we stand ready to serve all students through the end of the school year.

2020 - 2021 SCHOOL SUPPLY KITS | AVAILABLE FOR ORDER NOW!
If you click on the link above you can purchase all your school supplies for the fall for your child going into K through 5th grade next year, and support a small business at the same time! We changed companies from previous years and this company only serves about 6,000 schools nationwide. And you never have to enter a store! This will only be available until the 3rd week of June, so please order your supply kits now and pass this on to anyone else who has a Ridgewood student next year (including incoming K students). Oh, and this is NOT a fundraiser, simply a way for Ridgewood parents to get their school supply shopping done in 5 minutes or less :) Your supplies will be in your child's classroom in the fall when they arrive.
- We are using 1st Day School Supplies for our school supply orders for the upcoming year. Below is a link to the store for you to purchase your supply kit. All kits will be delivered directly to the school before the start of school in the fall.
- Supply kits must be ordered by JUNE 12th, 2020 to be included in the order.
- The teachers have put in specific requests for items they want in the supply kits. We have addressed issues with the quality of the supplies as well.
For those who want to purchase supplies on their own, lists will be coming out. We will let you know when they are out.
If at any time you are in need of emergency food, please call us at Ridgewood and leave a message. Messages will be checked daily. We will do our best to assist you.
Anyone can call 211 for assistance with housing, childcare, utility bills, or if you have health and safety questions or need any other resources. Help is available in several languages. You can also get help online at http://211.org/
The Oregon Food Bank is open. Check here for more information: https://www.oregonfoodbank.org/
All families can set up free internet access for 2 months through Comcast. Go here for details: https://www.internetessentials.com/ or call 1-855-846-8376.
All Beaverton schools and buildings are closed and this includes our playgrounds, fields, and tracks. All outdoor gates have been locked in support of public health and to limit the spread of COVID-19. Due to limited staff we are unable to maintain safe fall zones at our play structures. Also, please note on Sunday, March 22, 2020, THPRD notified the community that their outdoor playgrounds and exercise equipment are closed to the public.
BOX TOPS COLLECTION GOES DIGITAL
The paper box top collection program has been discontinued by General Mill, so we are no longer collecting box tops at school. However, you can still earn money for Ridgewood; if you see the label below, simply use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. Box Tops are still worth the same amount and what’s great is the app will instantly add cash to the school’s earnings online. Find more info here.
