If you would like to refer your child for the March 2024 CogAT and/or Iowa Assessment, please complete this Google Form by February 23, 2024. If you are unable to complete the form, please email gifted services coordinator Jeanne Beaver at jbeaver@uaschools.org.
Food Rescue/Reduction Program
Our focus for BOBCAT Day on January 8, 2024 is our broader community. The students will participate in various activities throughout the day focused on cooperation and how to help others in the community. One of the larger projects that will take place on BOBCAT Day will be making “kindness kits” that will be distributed to people without homes.
In conjunction with this project, we are starting a Food Rescue/Reduction Program at Barrington. This is a program that other schools in the district are doing with great success. The goal of this is to reduce the waste of food/beverages in our cafeteria, but also to help those in need. We are partnering with another organization, Heart to Heart, which will take these donations to three different shelters/food pantries.
On BOBCAT Day, the students will learn about this program as well as our composting program and will continue to have these discussions throughout the rest of the year. Below are key points we will cover and for you to reiterate these at home:
The program begins Tuesday, 1/16/24
Foods that can be donated:
Whole fruit with peels intact
Unopened food items
Unopened beverages
Foods that CANNOT be donated:
Items that have been opened
Expired items
Fruits or veggies that have been peeled
Bring home foods that you will eat after school or another day
Do NOT purchase items in the cafeteria to donate
Do NOT donate items if you are still hungry
COMPOST items that have been opened or partially eaten
We are excited to initiate this program at Barrington to show our students how we can have a great impact on those in our broader community. We appreciate your partnership and support with this program.
