Cane Toad
Invasive
Background and Characteristics
Three thousand cane toads were introduced to Australia in 1935 to control the cane beetle infestation, but this backfired and caused more problems than it solved. They have successfully populated Australia because they have few natural predators. The cane toad is large with dry, warty skin and venom secreted near the shoulders.
Threats and Solutions
The cane toad population in Australia is known for poisoning animals that attempt to consume them and the depletion of native fauna from the cane toads feeding on them. There have been no successful solutions discovered to solve the overpopulation.
