Behavior/Classroom Management Corner: Effective Strategies: What Does Work for Behaviors? (From Whatever It Takes! For All Students to Succeed in School and Life by Dr. Bryan Pearlman)
- Build a Relationship: Nothing can help more or replace the power of a positive relationship!
- Stay Calm: struggling students feed off of the actions, body language, and volume of others in their environment - this can either help reduce the issue or increase the intensity. Good first step is to at least appear to be calm, even if you are freaking out inside!
- Be Proactive: Planning in advance is the best course of action. It is better to be over-planned than to be unprepared for a situation.
- Do NOT Take Things Personally (It is Not About You): Students who are struggling will say do unkind things - this is due to whatever they are struggling with internally or due to other environmental issues - it is not about you so don't take the situation personally.
- Focus On and Reinforce the Positives: While it is easy to get sucked into focusing on the negatives or challenges with a student, we have to remember that this is a child and ensure that we focus on the positives.
- Create a Safe and Quiet Space in Your Room: Have an escape and a choice for a struggling student where they can calm and work on regulating themselves.
- Teach Social Skills: Many of our students have not been taught social skill-related items that we take for granted. How can we expect the students to utilize these, if they have never been taught?
- Use Fewer Words: There are hundreds of thousands of words in the English language. When dealing with a struggling student, you don't need to use all of them. It is better to be concise and direct and walk away - have the second to last word!
- Incorporate Daily Movement and MIndfulness Activities: Some students come to school in no shape to learn. Some are too hight, some are too low, some have sensory input needs, and other just need help readjusting after a rough morning at home or on the bus. An investment of as little as fifteen minutes a day has been proven to significantly increase the liklihood of success for students.
- Clear and Concise Rules and Expectations: Make sure your procedures and expectations are spelled out, taught, posted, and revisited frequently. Some challenging situations arise out of confusion, lack of clarity, or lack of practice.
- Plan for Regular and Frequent Breaks: Build in regular and frequent breaks for the whole class to take a brain/stretch break - some behaviors are due to a student's lack of ability to focus or attend for long periods of time.
- Plan for Transitions and Changes in Schedules/Routines: Change is hard for everyone. Some student's struggle with transitions and changes. These can be and should be planned for as much as possible - it can be as simple as keeping a visual schedule and letting students know of changes to the schedule/routine in advance.
- Listen and Look for Triggers: Often there are signs, signals, and triggers that can be avoided or eliminated - if we can get in front of the antecedent or cause, we may very well eliminate the behaviors.
