Jan. 14 - 18, 2019
Math
Monday, we will be solving math problems with parentheses. Tuesday, the students will be using the distributive property to solve multiplication problems with 9's. Wednesday, we will again be solving multiplication & division problems with 9's. Thursday, we will work with square numbers. Friday, the students will learn how to solve two step story problems.
Reading
This week, we will continue our study of nonfiction as we learn more about the Titanic. Monday, we will learn the difference between a fact and an opinion. Wednesday, we'll practice following multistep directions. Thursday, we'll review the purpose of various nonfiction text features. Friday, the students will see how information from the text and text features can be used to help us make predictions.
Writing & Spelling
This week, we will begin a new unit in Writing - persuasive. We will start by defining that a fact is a statement can be proven true. An opinion is a person's beliefs or feelings about a topic. Then, we'll practice labeling and writing facts & opinions. Next, we will practice sorting facts & opinions. Last, we will use an organizer to write an opinion and 5 reasons or facts that support it.
During our Spelling & Grammar time , we will work with words that contain a soft g or c sound, inferences, and singular & plural possessive nouns.
Science
Monday, we will watch a video that explains how we inherit traits from our mother & father. We will also see that the phenotype that is expressed is controlled by the dominant gene. Tuesday & Wednesday, the students will combine genes from 2 parent plants to see what phenotype will be expressed in the baby plant. Thursday, we'll learn about Punnett Squares and how they can be used to predict the possible outcomes when 2 plants are crossed.
