Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell: The Books to Grow
Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell have teamed up to create a series of books that target younger audiences and help them work though and understand important ideas and concepts about themselves and the world around them! These books would be a great series of books to read aloud to a kindergarten class. This would be especially helpful in the beginning of the year when students are just beginning to enter school for the first time and need help understanding things like how to share and how to work through different feelings and emotions. Teachers could use these books to help start off lessons concerning classroom management and behavior and also with themes such as courage and trying your very best. Because this flyer just gives an overview about each one of the books, I think that it could appeal to both students and teachers.
Today I feel Silly and other moods that make my day
This book is all about the different moods that the character has and how she sometimes doesn't know how to deal with all her moods and emotions. The main take away from this book was that it's okay to have these emotions, kids just need to learn to realize that and process them in accurate ways. I really liked this book because even as an adult I was reminded that it is okay to feel silly, happy, mad, and angry sometimes I just have to deal with these emotions in the proper manner.
Is There Really a Human Race?
I love all the books by Jamie Lee Curtis but this one is one of my favorites. This book is all about the human race and acknowledging the fact that the human race is a hard thing to wrap your mind around. This story really shows the thoughts kids may have about life and how what's most important is trying your best, helping others, and making BIG BOLD CHOICES and overall making the world a better place.
When I was Little
I really liked this book because I feel like it is a book that a kindergarten teacher could read in the beginning of the year as students are beginning to transition into school. This story is all about a 4 year old reminiscing on when she was little and how things have changed now that she is older. Some changes are bigger and more drastic than others but through going back and thinking about these changes the little girl is now beginning to realize who she is. I think this book is really beneficial to a kindergarten classroom because our students are going to be learning a lot about themselves over the year and this book could help them begin doing that.
Big Words for Little People
This is a great book to read before starting Daily Cafe, or writing Workshops because it is all about kids learning to use big words and expand their vocabulary. Throughout this book students will learn more advanced words to use in everyday conversations and the importance of sounding words out and using context clues to learn what different words mean.
My Brave Year of Firsts: Tries, Sighs, and High Fives.
This is another one of Jamie Lee Curtis' books that I really enjoyed and think will greatly benefit a kindergarten classroom. This book is all about a little girl's year of firsts. However, this book doesn't just list the fun stuff, it also list the first time making a mistake and having to deal with the consequences and doing something and not being as successful and you may have hoped. I think that this is very important because kindergarten will be a big year of first for students. These first will be both good and bad but all these experiences are important and will help the student become better overall.
Tell me Again about the Night I was Born
This story was not what I expected it to be when I read the title. This story is all about adoption and the process that that took place as the parents adopted their child, took her home, and shared their first moments and experiences together. I think this is a very sentimental book but I am not sure if the classroom is the right environment to read this book unless I had a student in my class who was adopted and felt that it was a topic that needed to be addressed.
