Did you know…
Burton is continuing to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! Building-wide students and staff are learning about notable AAPI people through our “Guess Who: AAPI Edition” game. We have posters hung up outside the office and in the mornings club members read clues over the announcements. Students from TK-5 can learn about the people highlighted and submit guesses. Then on Fridays, club members read the clues with the answers, and choose a few students with correct guesses to win a little prize. Play along with us and see if you can guess who:
Monday’s clue was:
I was born in India and earned my degree in aeronautical engineering. That led me to become the 1st Indian-born woman to go to space! It wasn't easy and was persuaded by many not to do it but that inspired many Indian-born people to build a career in spaceflight. Who am I?
And the answer is: I am Kalpana Chawla
Wednesday’s clue was:
I am a Filipino-American who was a farmworker and Civil Rights Leader. I helped create one of the most influential labor organizations, the United Farm Workers. I have also led several social justice initiatives for farm and animal workers. Who am I?
And the answer is: I am Alex Ellidor
Thanks for playing and learning along with us! If you have any questions about the Diversity Alliance Club, please feel free to contact club advisors: Mrs. Keller or Mr. Torres
Burton's First Culture Fest was a HUGE success
Burton Culture Fest
On Wednesday evening, we held our first ever Burton Culture Fest event! We had a fantastic turnout with approximately 200 children and their families participating! Burton’s Diversity Alliance Club and PTA planned this event together with the goal of sharing and celebrating the cultural heritages of Burton families. Families and teachers volunteered to share their cultures by setting up booths with a flag, photos and videos, artifacts and special items, crafts, candy and treats, and more! We had Burton families and teachers representing India, Mexico, New Zealand, America Odawa, Israel, South Korea, France, Poland, and Italy, along with a booth on immigration & migration. Children received passports and could travel with their families booth to booth to learn about each country and culture through information, stories, activities, and more. Children and adults loved tasting the candies and treats from different countries! Thank you to the families and teachers who volunteered to share their culture by running a table and sharing their stories, histories, and lives with us. Thank you to our fantastic custodial staff for all their help. Thank you to the many Diversity Alliance Club students who volunteered at the event as hosts and tour guides. Thank you to our amazing PTA and volunteers who made this event possible, and will ensure that this will continue into next year and beyond. We are so grateful for our Burton family and the opportunity to come together to learn and celebrate about different cultures from all over the world! Please enjoy these fabulous Photos of Culture Fest
