JBD SEAGULL FOCUS
December 7, 2018 "Embrace the Adventure!"
From the Principal
A special thank you goes out to the PTA for the beautiful tree and decorations in our foyer! Children have been bringing in ornaments for the tree and it is coming alive with more and more decorations everyday. We will save them all and reuse them every year. Thank you for the donations!
Inclement weather is on the way, most models forecast rain for our area, but as always, stay tuned for alerts or closings due to weather. We are keeping our fingers crossed that all is well in Hampton Roads this weekend. Please know we will do all we can to keep your children warm and safe in the upcoming chilly months.
Also, as the weather gets colder, children are more inclined to stay in and watch movies or play video games. Below is an article that I found very interesting in last week's Virginia Pilot. If you are like many other parents, you may have a child slightly obsessed with Fortnite. We hear about it at school a lot! Please take a moment and read about one parent's struggle with her teenage son and Fortnite. It is always recommended to place limits on how much time your child spends playing video games.
Enjoy the weekend and take time to curl up with your child with a cozy book. No matter what age, children are never too old to read with their parents! The other article attached speaks to reading aloud to children of all ages.
I look forward to seeing many of you at Clean the Bay Day tomorrow and Shorebreak Pizza on Monday night!

SPIRIT NIGHT at SHOREBREAK
CLINIC CORNER December 2018
Flu and strep throat season has started and yes at John B. Dey staff and students are starting to be affected.
SYMPTOMS of the flu include; high fever, headache, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues can also be present.
Most healthy adults may be able to INFECT others beginning 1 day before they even have symptoms and up to 5 days after the symptoms start.
The flu is SPREAD usually person to person through coughing or sneezing, but can be spread by touching surfaces that are infected.
PREVENTION:
Get vaccinated
Avoid close contact with sick people.
please keep your child home when the flu is suspected to prevent the spread within the classroom. If your student has a fever greater than 100 degrees and vomiting keep them home. They can return to school 24 hours after the last vomit and fever free with no fever reducing medication.
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing using the crook of your arm instead of your hands.
Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Practice other good health habits: sleep, be active, manage stress, drink fluids, eat well.
COUGH DROPS-Are allowed in school for that persistent cough. Guidelines for the use of cough drops in school.
Written permission will be necessary from the parent/guardian when the child brings cough drops to school. A note from parent/guardian allowing cough drops in school is perfect. Put a few cough drops in a ziplock bag with the note and the student can bring them to school.
The cough drops will be stored in the clinic for grades K,1ST, AND 2ND. For grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th in the cottages they can be kept in the student’s back pack but let the teacher and or nurse know about the cough drops.
A student should not be consume more than 1 cough drop per hour.
Students should not share cough drops with others.
The nurse will assess the student’s temperature, throat and lungs to rule out illness that might require exclusion.
If a student requires the use of cough drops for 3 or more consecutive days then follow up with their primary doctor is recommended.
Chap Stick is allowed in school for chapped/ dry lips. No note from the parent needed on this. The clinic has Vaseline to treat chap lips.
