Fifth Grade Concert
Our fifth graders are getting very excited about their upcoming concert on Thursday, February 13th. The title of our music showcase is ON THE RADIO. One of the pieces we will be performing will be the STAR WARS theme. We are hoping that some families may have STAR WARS character masks that you wouldn’t mind letting us use. We could also use any lightsabers you may have. We promise to take good care of them. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Kostreva at:

Our Learning
Literacy:
This week, we began unit 5 in literacy. The focus is on imagination and our essential question is "Is imagination more valuable than knowledge?" We will have discussions based around how imagination can drive learning and vice versa. We will also focus on fantasy books and what makes a book or story a fantasy.
In writing, the students finished their memoirs and they turned out beautiful! They are excited to share and show off their memoirs. We will now move to fantasy writing, taking the elements of fantasy learned from reading class and applying it to their own writing.
Math Workshop
The fifth graders have been developing their skills with adding fractions with unlike denominators. They have been adding both fractions and mixed numbers. Next week, students will be working with subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.
The targets or big ideas for fifth grade are:
- I can explain, recognize, and generate equivalent fractions.
- I can use a variety of strategies to add and subtract fractions and mixed numberswith unlike denominators.

5-PS1-3. Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties
5-PS1-4. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.
Mrs. Edwards' January Guidance Lesson
This month during social/emotional learning lessons, students worked to identify diversity and how diversity strengthens our community. The lessons expanded awareness of differences and increased empathy towards others. The school counselor provides an activity done in class to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.
