Curriculum Updates
Language Arts
This week in language arts we will read the nonfiction text called Working in Space. Our comprehension skill be be text and graphic features. We will also practice classifying and categorizing. Our spelling words have the ow, ou sound. We will write an opinion piece on if we think it would be scary or exciting to go to space and use examples from the text to support our opinions.
Next week, we will write animal research reports and therefore will NOT have a spelling list (May 1st-May 5th).
Math
In math we will finish up topic 13 on solving addition and subtraction story problems involving length. Then we will do one lesson from topic 14 on bar graphs and skip ahead to topic 15 on shapes. Our first two lessons will be on 2-dimensional shapes and polygons and angles. We are skipping ahead because many items from topic 15 are on our district end of the year math assessment and we want to make sure the students have been taught the content before they are tested! We will go back to finish topic 14 on graphs and charts later on.
Science/Social Studies/Health
In science we continue to check-in and observe changes on our brassica plants, mealworms, and milkweed bugs. Our caterpillars will arrive at the end of the week!
In social studies we are learning about how San Francisco grew from a small town into a large city. We will build a timeline by placing the events of the 1906 earthquake in sequence and then students will create a timeline of their own life.
In health we finished up the chapter on our body and are moving on to keeping clean and fit.
Three book order forms are being sent home today. This will be the last book order of the year. These will be due Wednesday, May 3rd.
If you'd like to order online, please go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs.
Our class code is H84CH.
If you'd prefer to send in the paper order form, that is great as well, just be sure to include a check made out to Scholastic with your order. Thanks!
