The Week in Review
Spring Break is almost here! 5 days left!
The past few weeks have been a whirl in Science and Social Studies! We have covered the different states of matter, and some of the properties of each state. We began our discussion in what a solid looks like, and changing much of our wording from "hard" to discussing it's shape, volume, and molecular structure. We did the same for liquids and gases. After that, we looked at the various ways we can observe in our world. We obviously use our senses everyday, but we learned that we can also use tools to measure things and help our observations. In order to practice this each group was given an apple they had to PROVE was theirs. We can prove things with measurement. Physical features can change, but mass, density, volume, and other measurements give us a clearer picture which helps us prove things. So each group took their apple and measured mass, circumference, volume, density, and talked about what each of those actually mean! It is my hope that we never confuse weight and mass! They are different!
That led us into our snacks! We took our snacks we brought and we described their physical characteristics. What made them different from the other snacks that were brought? From there we combined all our snacks into one mixture! We had Trix, Goldfish, Pretzels, Chips, and much more combined together! Before enjoying our mixture though, we had to learn that we can separate mixtures into it's parts and we proved that. We couldn't enjoy our mixture without a solution though, and we had some tasty lemonade solution to help with that!

Orange Tuesday
Please encourage your student to wear ORANGE on Tuesdays for no other reason than it's a great color!
E-Week
On February 24 our students were greeted with a surprise lesson from Steve Ellis, a lead development manager from IBM.
Steve talked to us about different things in each class. We talked about how the world works and how it's becoming a world more heavily rooted in technology. Everyone uses technology now, and we have to understand how these things work. We learned about programming and the language we use to communicate with robots in order to accomplish tasks and how complex that is. Then we spent some time discussing the future and where we would like to see ourselves in college and beyond. Steve challenged the kids to never stop dreaming, because the technology we will be using in 20 years could easily be invented by someone that is in 5th grade right now.
We are very thankful for Mr. Ellis taking the time to come out and teach us some things about how our world works!

AquaUpdate
To summarize the last few weeks in the tank one might say, "chaotic." Stress levels are high all around. Water conditions remain ideal for the remaining fish after the passing of Nyx, but to say they are thriving would be a lie. The concern lies that there may be some unseen fish disease moving slowly through the tank, and it is unclear if or when the next fish may pass.
Until that day, they will continue to show up on time and hungry for feeding, and will also be taking Spring Break very seriously as the 9-day break turns into a Survivor-type break compared to the twice-a-day tending to they receive now.
